barred barnevelder???

I've seen a fair number of barnies that are trying to lose their melanizers. I am most definitely NOT an expert, but I would bet that she is just poorly selected and is drifting away from the standard.

She is following the same general pattern of development as "good" barnies -- barring developing into lacing -- she's just not getting all the way there. Give her more time, and I bet she'll get even closer to the laced look -- but I also bet she'll never make it all the way.

Okay, here are pix. You know, it looks like there's a little more lacing, but I would be interested in hearing any and all opinions. She's almost 24 weeks old now.

This pullet is showing pencilling, not double lacing. If you look at the very outer edge of the feather, this pullet has the outer edge of the feather starting with the ground colour (red, gold, whatever you want to call it) and a double laced with start with black as it's outer edge. So a Barnevelder double laced feather will be black, red, black, red from the outer edge. This is call Partridge when it show this kind of pencilling and it doesn't surprise me when I see what she look like as a youngster with the barring. My Barnevelders never showed barring at that age as chicks.
I bred Barnevelders for years and now I breed Partridge Chanteclers.

This is a Barnevelder showing the black hackle and head and double lacing:

This is a Partridge Chantecler showing pencilling that makes up the Partridge variety:

Your pullet will eventually exchange all her barring for pencilling, sometimes it takes an adult molt to get to the final colour.

This post has been so helpful! We have a little ‘barnevelder’ that looks quite similar to yours, but a bit less red so far. I’m a little disappointed, but she’s a happy little chick, so waiting to see what she grows into!
