Barred Cochins..good breed?

I think I am in love!! We went to a farm to pick up some fencing we bought..and the lady there had about 16 Barred Cochins...I fell in love with them!! The lady really had mixed things to say about them...and she said that she just had them because her daughter needed a place to keep them..I offered to buy all of them but she said no..they were just so fluffy..cute and seemed so docile! Anyone have any experiance with this breed? If so any advice on caring for them? They seem short and fat...do they have alot of issues with their legs? I just wanted them ALL...

Does anyone have any pictures of their cochins? I want a good layer and am still trying to find what breed I want to go with...I just loved the look and how they acted around people....

They are lovely!! Good layers? Do they just look like they are heavy? No issues with legs? I just can not get over how pretty they are...I thought I loved my autralope..but now...don't know...

Were these large/standard or bantam cochins?


I love cochins and have both bantam - pens in silver laced and mille fleur - and a couple large hens - a white and a silver laced.


My large hens are fair layers, not great - and my white goes broody twice a year.

My bantam silver laced are laying machines - from 9 girls I average 6 eggs a day - yes they are small but they taste just as great as a big egg.

My mille fleur are good layers but do go broody about twice a year also.



I also have a bantam red cochin hen - Ruby and she goes broody every 12/13 weeks and between clutches lays about 6 eggs (so 24 or so a year) - but she makes up for the lack of egg laying by being a mothering machine. She is, in my eyes, worth her weight in gold.

i have a small flock of 8 blue std cochins... they're still very young, but i can't wait for them to start laying and going broody... they're sweet and hilarious to watch...

they are a large bird mostly feathere lay good medim size egg do go broody
