Hi all,

I've got a broody sitting on some eggs with a little chance something might hatch.

My boy is barred and the egg mum is not. This is the wrong way round for the sexing thing isn't it?

Is it female needs to be barred and male not barred?

I've tried googling but I'm not explaining myself to Google and Alexa hasn't a clue what I'm on about so if you guys understand me hallelujah!

Yep, you're right, that's the wrong way around for sex linking. If your male is double barred (has two copies of the barring gene), every chick will be single barred (one copy of the barring gene). If he's single barred, every chick will have a 50% chance of being single barred, regardless of gender.

Is it female needs to be barred and male not barred?

Yep, for sex linking it would need to be a barred mom and a non-barred dad.

The barring gene is on the Z chromosome, and the mother hen has only one Z chromosome. So, if the dad has no barring at all, but the mother is barred, then all the male chicks will be barred, and the female chicks will have no barring.

Here is an example (source)

Thank you, it would have been nice but I think my boy is cuckoo Marans X cream legbar. Does this make him double barred and all the chicks if they hatch will be barred?
