barred rock behaviors

I have 5, all of whom come tearing across the lawn to greet me every time I head outside. They are very sweet, not loud, but make laughing noises. I'm partial to one who will get behind me and tap me on the shoulder when I sit down until I put her i my lap and pet her. All five want to be held and walked around the yard by my daughters, who are only too willing to baby them!

Of course, I've never owned any but these 5, but my neighbor's RIR's seem gritchy compared to my girls! I'm sold.

Yeah RIR's aint as fun as BR's, a lot of mine border on mean... LOL I just stick 'em out there in the turkey pin till they calm down!

My RIRs are nervous, shy. My Australorps are nervous, smart, and sorta noisy. My Speckled Sussex is Ms. Dominant, and makes strange noises. My BR is the baby and very sweet and curious; more open to me.

Now, one of my Australorps flew the coop and tangled with my dog, unfortunately, to her demise and my great sadness. So I wanted to replace her with another BR. What I got instead was a Dominiquer (almost identical in look). SHE is a doll. Seeks my hand out, seeks my eyes/gaze, loves me to pet her. I'd love 6 of her! Try a Dominiquer if you can!!

My 4 BR's talk to me all the time. They run to me as soon as I step out the door. They don't have a rooster in there flock and maybe that is why. My BO's & LB's each have a rooster in there flock and they don't act the same way as the BR's.

Our 3 barred rock girls are sweet and friendly. That's a good thing because they range pretty far and have met all the neighbors. When we're outside, they tend to follow us around (probably hoping we have some food and are clumsy enough to drop it). In the evening when we're sitting in the garden, they crowd around us and burble at us. One frequently jumps up on our laps and doesn't mind being picked up. One of the others hates being picked up, while the middle one tolerates it with a little grumbling.

Overally, they're nice, friendly chickens - at least in groups of 3 hens.

They are my favorite breed. They are smart, great foragers, plucky, funny and reliable egg layers. Buy as many as you have room for! You won't regret it.

I'll second that. Chatty Cathy

Yep, mine 'talk' to me too! I LOVE my barred rocks! They come running as soon as we call them, follow us around and they are very curious about everything I do outside, almost to the point of being a pest. I will always have barred rocks, we are also getting buff orps in the spring.
