Barred Rock Chick

Yes, that's double white barring. Even if the comb wasn't red, this would be male specific coloring. Sorry you had to spend so much

I’m glad he’s okay either way. I just may not be able to keep him unfortunately… know of anyone who would by a rooster for $450? lol

Hahaha no one will probably buy him for that much.

Have you considered posting health questions on this forum instead of taking your chickens to the vet? A lot of vets don't have training in birds and will just run tests without a clear idea of how to treat. The folks on BYC have been treating their own chickens for many years and might have some remedies for various conditions.

That is so unfortunate - it sounds like your vet took you for a ride 😥😥😥 Glad the chick is okay! In the future you can ask here and there are a lot of people here that know as much or more than most vets do about poultry care. He sure is a cute little guy!!

I’m apart of a poultry veterinarian group on Facebook, and they are the ones that told me to go. He was passing almost exclusively blood. The people in this group agreed with the tests run by her… there’s avian vets in the group as moderators and admin that go unnamed. I probably could have just administered Corid on my own, but there’s another brooder next to them too…
I’m hoping to keep him though. We just need to find a property where we can before he crows! Haha

No, it was all on the up and up. There were two of them. I asked in my poultry veterinarian advice group on Facebook, and they were the ones that sent me in. I live in an extremely expensive area. Minimum wage is $16.50 an hour. lol

Thanks. I think so too! We cannot have roosters where we are right now, but we are in the process of trying to find a house where we can keep them. Fingers crossed we find a place before he crows! Haha

I hope you can find a place!! We are in the process now of building in an area where we can have them. It will be so nice!

If he does start crowing before you move, I have had success with putting a crowing cockerel in a cardboard box at night and closing it (it’s far from airtight, but is dark in there) and then either bringing it inside or in the garage overnight, or sometimes just leaving the box in the coop. Then around 9 am I will let the boy back out and if he crows during the day it isn’t a big deal. Most people don’t seem to mind very much if they aren’t being woken up early by crowing!

That’s exciting!!

Thanks for the tip. I will try this. I just had to drop off a 15 week cockerel who was the sweetest at a local farm. I’ve gotten used to having to do so, but I would rather not do so with any more. Our current place goes on the market on Thursday! 🙏🏼

Trying to find an animal zoned home in our area that will meet the needs of our family is proving challenging, but I’m hopeful!
