Got my first ever chickens today and was hoping you could help identify the gender of my 7 week old Barred Rock baby!

eeep! Thank you all! Luckily I can "trade" him back for a lady

Any things in particular I should look for to identify a female, other than a smaller comb and wattles?

I'm no expert, but at that age I'd say the comb and wattle is the only real thing you can go for - it should be not too bad if the breeder has lots of barred chickens of the same age for direct comparison.

Good luck!

Female Barred Rocks are DARKER LOOKING, have Darker legs as well. compared to the female the males will have a grayish look while females have a more blackish look. When you go for your trade you will notice what I'm saying. side by side you will be able to pick the darker one pretty easily. Hope this helps! I got 7 Barred Rock females coming April 11th. I can't wait. I just pray they get here safe and sound. :)

Just as an fji, your bird is not a Rock. It's a Dominique, they have the rose combs. Rocks have straight combs.

When picking out a barred pullet, look for a bird that's darker overall. males have twice as much white as black, females have twice as much black as white. And small, fleshy colored combs until they're ready to lay (under 4-5 months).

It looks like you've got a cockerel on your hands, and i agree with everyone else, barred rock hens are darker. i read that roosters feathers are more vibrant and brighter. And I'm pretty sure its true. I've had 3 roosters and all of their feathers were a lot more brighter. Hope this helps!
