I bought a Barred Rock (pullet?) from a fella a while ago and he told me it was female. The bird is about 6 months old right now and it is unclear to me as to if it is a pullet or cockerel. I don't want a male in my small flock of 12 and am fairly new to the chicken thing. I think I am in denial that Barbara, as the kids named her, might be Bob. Just yesterday we watched the bird start to make sounds resembling faint rooster-like crows and now I'm nervous. She is now bigger than the other birds of different breeds, has the saddle feathers I think, a bright red comb, and has very little beginning nubs/spurs. Can you please help me identify the sex of this bird with the photos?

That's a roo for sure. Sorry.

Thank you for the help everyone!!! I'll be selling this guy and replacing with a female BR. Any pointers on how to identify sex in 4-6 week BR?

Tips? BR hens will be lighter in color. Less white on them. IF they still have their fuzz on top of their heads, a pullet will have a definite circle of (yellow) there. A boy's will be 'messier.' Good luck!

Lighter? No females will be darker

At six weeks, the cockerels will have bright, white bars, while the females will often appear dark, more with spots of white instead of the clean bars.
The pullets will have still have very dull, yellow combs, while at six weeks, the cockerels will already have small, red wattles sprouting and their combs will be pinking up considerably.
