We first thought it was a she (nothing has ever popped out when vent sexing) but people convinced me he is a roo. We thought we heard it try to crow a couple times but not sure and now we are confused that maybe he is actually truly a she?

Ideas?

Roo for sure. Barred rock hen has much darker barring color, because hen only carries one barring gene while cockerel carries two. Light color barring indicates roo.

The comb is far too red at 3ish months to even consider it a pullet. Coloring of feathers, comb and comb size and age of bird all point to cockerel.

The barred are relatively easy to sex as chicks by leg color, spot and as feathers start to grow. All single comb birds are easy to identify at 8 to 10 weeks due to comb color- males will start to redden. By 3 and 4 months it's a dead give away as pullet combs do not redden until point of lay which is late 4 months and up to 7 months of age depending on breed. All red combed single comb birds at young age are cockerels without exception. Rose comb is a different story.
