Barred rock hen or roo?

They all look like they have larger combs. Are they all doodles? Lol I think I've looked at too many chicken pictures today. They're all looking roosish lol

Haha I hope they aren't all roos! We are hoping for no more than 2 total out of the 17 chickens we have. We have 1 confirmed Russian Orloff roo. But now I'm wondering what breed(s) I have because they all have a single comb no rose comb on the "dominique" :idunno

I read an article that was vague but said something along the lines of typically roosters start growing combs and wattle as young as 4 to 6 weeks (I believe) meaning they get larger and pinkin or are red. and hens can start at 6 weeks (but typically happens at 12 to 14 weeks I believe) with light pink to reddish. So I guess my question is when did you notice they were turning red. Granted I know that isnt the most reliable way but it's what we have to work with as they haven't grown saddle feathers yet

I don't remember when they started to show/turn red.

I'm going to be the black sheep of the group here, and lean towards pullet. :) Yes, this BR is quite light for a female, but comb/wattle development appear to be in line with the rest of your flock's. For reference, here's one of my own Rock girls who gave us a bit of a scare when young due to her rather unusual coloration:

I got them all at tractor supply. And the other one is (supposed to be) a Russian Orloff :)
A breed I didn't know about! :love

As stated earlier... I won't jump to conclusions on gender... I had a Rock gal who was much lighter and gave us a scare early on. Especially with hatchery birds there can be wide variances. The dark wash legs I see in the first pic ARE a sex linked trait to females.

And boys are often MUCH redder in the comb by this age... some as early as 3 weeks... and I had a Silkie start crowing at 4 weeks!

Your Orloff is CLEARLY a cockerel. For this one... I would still be holding out hope for female. Behavior can be a good indicator. Boys are often more interested in running to join in any chest bumping. While gals are often just more interested in foraging... And I have seen a huge variance in maturity (aka redness) in hatchery birds as wide as a month difference from the same breed with the same hatch date... The little white head I see poking under the ladder is clearly a cockerel as well, if it's the same age.

As noted by another poster... just a few more weeks before you can verify saddle and hackle (not cackle, though that's funnier and fitting :p) feathers...
