Barred rock Hen or Roo?

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I just need to not lose sleep over it and wait it out. If there was overwhelming consensus that I have a cockerel, I was going to start looking now for a good home while I have time. But I suppose I need to wait a little longer before jumping to a conclusion?

Always the best thing to do. Just relax, it’s not a good thing to get stressed over.

Could go either way. The head spot on my BR (see profile pic) was kind of big and messy; she also grew a big comb early and I was sure she was going to turn out to be a cockerel. But her head grew into the comb, and she turned out to be just a (very bossy) pullet.

I'd like to see more dark wash down the legs, but they both have similar pattern, so could just be their particular genetic makeup.

Good luck! Check back in in a few weeks. And, yeah, if you can, try not to lose sleep over it. I got a little too obsessed with trying to *figure it out*, and, you know, they'll eventually let you know.

Like others said, don't stress, there's still time for them to prove you wrong. It's not possible to tell for sure at this age. And if they do turn out to be a roo and you love them, it may be best to wait anyways and advertise them as a pet roo or a good flock protector. If someone buys them thinking they'll be a hen, the chick may end up as chicken dinner when they're dissapointed!

Good advice- thanks

Based on how dark its barring appears to be its a pullet. That and how distinct the head spot is.

For comparison this was how my barred rock cockerel looked like when he was chick.

See how he has clear, distinct barring and a large scattered head spot.

And here is what my barred rock hen looked like when she was a chick.

See her defined head spot and less distinct barring.

Based of of this your chick is most likely a pullet.

Thanks! I see what you’re saying/ will hold out in hopes of it being a pullet!
