Barred Rock Lovers!!! update pic page 3

I've had two barred rock hens. Both were good layers. The one I have now escaped from the kid next door who had purchased a dozen BRs and a dozen RIRs. He lost interest and stopped locking them up at night. Eventually there were only two hens, the BR and one of the RIRs, left and they managed to wiggle under the fence and joined my little flock. The RIR is gone now but Rocky is an old pet at this point. She laid several eggs a week for quite a long time. She's not as friendly as the red sex links that we've had but she's calm. The first one we had years ago was even friendlier and would hop up on my knee when I was gardening.

I love my barred rock hen! She lays an egg a day, sometimes jumbo sized. Even though I purchased her as a 7 mo. old, she was soon eating out of my hand and runs right over to me when I call out. She's very funny and vocal, in fact I like her best of the bunch!

Thanks everyone for your replies. It was truly unexpected to open of a box of yellow fluffs and find two little black chicks in there. Ideal had owed me a credit so when I told them to just add a few more pullets, I figured they would be BO's. At least they got the pullet part right.
Everybody is doing great and full of energy. In the spring, hopefully I can introduce them to my redstar flock for egg production.

I have one BR hen, she is MUCH bigger than the rest of my flock, I'd say she weighs about 9 lbs. She is shy and not a fan of being handled. I try to pick her up once in a while anyway. She would never jump on my lap like some of the other girls, but she is beautiful with light green eyes & a great layer & she has a very distinct voice.

My chicks are 7 weeks Monday. I have 3 BR's- Dorothy, Rose and Blanche. (I named a bossy Delaware Sophia!) Can only tell you that mine seems sweet and soooooooo curious!
I have one that doesn't mind being held at all.

WE love our barred rock Phoebe! We call her the Zen Hen because she's always acted so calm and mellow and, well, hen-like! She is 23 weeks old and has been doign the "egg squat" for 2 weeks now but no egg. Any day, hopefully.

She is by far the calmest and friendliest of our girls so far. Very easy to catch and seems to enjoy being held. Really pretty , too, nice feathers and elegant slanty eyes.
She is also much FATTER than the other girls, heavier, seems bigger-boned, denser.

I wonder if her temperament will change when she starts to lay: I hope not... she is such a super-sweetie!

Great names! I always loved that show, even thought I was pretty young when it was on.
