Barred Rock or Cuckoo Maran

Hello there,

I was wondering if you could help me figure out if my recent addition is a Barred Rock or a golden Cuckoo Maran? I got her a while ago, and unfortunately she is sick right now with who knows what. As you can see in the pic, she is not using her legs and they are kind of curled up. I am also posting on the Injury/Emergency forum too. Can anyone tell me which one she is? Thanks!

Well, depending on the age, she could be either.

Barred Rocks lose their yellow coloring in the shanks and beak when they give the color pigment to the yolk (laying eggs). The better the hen is as a layer, the lighter the legs will be.

If she's on the younger side, then you have a VERY good possibility of her being a Cuckoo Maran (although Golden I'm doubtful of).

Barred Rocks shouldn't have any brown in them like that one does. Hope you can determine what's wrong with her legs.
