In the Brooder
At what age do cockerels start crowing? I haven't heard anything more than the chick "peep" out of the barred rock. At 12 weeks old I hope I won't need to wait too much longer to get that confirmation.

Barred rock is definitely male. At 12 weeks, that comb and wattles are huge and red and must have been that way for some time.... they don't get like that overnight!.. A pullet wouldn't develop head gear like that for several more weeks until she reaches point of lay . Also, the pale barring indicates it's a cockerel.
The EE looks to be a pullet at this stage.
X2I agree
This is great news. I have one that I've crossed off as a roo. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be a hen. I'm gonna look at it better tomorrow.I had one that developed a huge comb and wattles at 10 weeks. We were pretty sure it was a roo until it laid an egg at 16 weeks. She's my smallest but the best layer ever!
