Barred Rock Pullet or Cockerel?

At what age do cockerels start crowing? I haven't heard anything more than the chick "peep" out of the barred rock. At 12 weeks old I hope I won't need to wait too much longer to get that confirmation.

Barred rock is definitely male. At 12 weeks, that comb and wattles are huge and red and must have been that way for some time.... they don't get like that overnight!.. A pullet wouldn't develop head gear like that for several more weeks until she reaches point of lay . Also, the pale barring indicates it's a cockerel.

The EE looks to be a pullet at this stage.

Looking at the feathering, the barred rock looks hen to me. A cockerel of that age would have more male feathering. Unless it's just the pic.

I had one that developed a huge comb and wattles at 10 weeks. We were pretty sure it was a roo until it laid an egg at 16 weeks. She's my smallest but the best layer ever!

This is great news. I have one that I've crossed off as a roo. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be a hen. I'm gonna look at it better tomorrow.

Here are 2 of my girls at 10 weeks. The one in the front ended up being a girl even though I "knew" it was a roo!

That barred rock has WAY more comb and wattles than my 14 week old pullets...

I already know this bird is a barred rock, and that it is 12 weeks old. Question is, will it be a hen or rooster?

I think the barred rock is a pulley because of the way the tail feathers come together and are symmetrical. -Rachel
