Males don't have black shanks?
Darker shanks in the pullets is a common trait for hatchery Barred Rocks. Again, that's not fool-proof. It usually becomes more noticeable as they age. This is mine at around 20 weeks. My pullets have much more color on their legs. The head spot is another thing to look into. However, I find it very unreliable for me. I believe it is more defined in heritage stock.
