Barred Rock the meanest breed?

Quote:
This thread started more, as I see it, in regards to a roo that's become aggressive - that can happen in any breed. My BR hens are fine and relatively mellow, although they boss the EE's around.

Some of the most aggressive roos I've seen are RIR.

Freezer camp is usually best for those.

I got some Barred Rock pullets from McMurray. They were the most aggressive, mean hens I'd ever owned.

Then I got one from Ideal and she was the sweetest bird I'd ever owned.

I probably won't ever own another as I'm into marans and ameraucanas and polish

I have two BR hens, 1 pullet and my main roo is a 1/2 BR and 1/2 Ameraucana and all of my birds are the gentlest birds you've ever met, the roo begs to be picked up (tugs at my pant leg then falls asleep in my arms) my hens are the first to meet me at the gate to say hello and get treats.

Of all my hens, the BR (Bossy) is the meanest. She's the only one who will try to peck me if I bother her in the nest box. She's aggressive toward other chickens, especially newcomers. She even makes mean growling type noises all the time. She never makes the cute clucking sounds that my friendlier birds make. I don't think I'd get another BR.

Depends on the bird... My BR hens are sweet. Roos, in general, or hit or miss in any breed. Of course, some breeds are meaner than others, but I wouldn't ever consider BRs a mean breed. They are great birds!! Just some roos seems to hatch for the purpose of dinner.

3 BR's and 3 RIR's none particularly aggressive, however the 3 RIRs are more dominant than my BR's. As a previous poster commented, every breed has their dominant aggressors and sweet calmer versions. I think you have a rooster issue, not a barred rock issue. You can solve the issue, he sees you as a threat, he wants to be the boss, you can separate him for a few days, put him in a small place, a little like solitary confinement, release him, if he still has the same issues, then you might want to eat him. If he calms down and relaxes and allows you to be the boss then keep him.

Well to set the story straight I recently had a babysitter over so me and the wife could leave for the first time without kids in about 3 years. This was the firsttime we used this person to sit for us . I was told that she was very good with kids and heard nothing but good things about her. Upon our arrival home that was about an hour and a half early we we found our 9 month old son crawling allover and crying with the sitter no where to be found. She came out of our bedroom that had the door shut. I paid her she went home only for me to find many of our items moved and misplaced all through the home and even outside . My pop door to the coop was shut I never shut it since it's been in the 80-90's lately . I shrugged it off untill lastnight . We figure she brought her boyfriend over to hang out with her and I think he may have messed with my chickens .

Something didn't add up yesterday afternoon with my roo he has never acted like that and today he's back to his normal self .Eating out of my hand following me around the yard etc etc. Maybe he was messed with and had enough.

I'm very happy to learn that your issue with your rooster has been resolved. It would've been a shame for the poor bird to suffer because of some nitwit messing with him. Good luck in the future, too.

I have to chime in ...
My hens ... 15 Light Brahmas, 2 Buff Orp's & 3 Barred Rock ... I would LOVE to get rid of ALL of my Light Brahma's and go BR & BO. (we are actually thinking about it) They are the most sweetest birds. Even the 1 BO roo I have is very friendly towards me BUT if he changes, he'll be my first slaughter. Of course if I did replace my 15 with all BR's, I'm sure I'd get a couple of turds out of the batch but don't be afraid of BR's. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my girls. VERY timid & gorgeous to look at.

Julie
