I'm really not very hopeful. Our Barred Rock has been kind of sulky lately, hanging around on her own a lot and around the house. Hubby was outside earlier on the phone and noticed the other chickens pecking at her rear end, which looks very nasty. He said we were probably going to have to euthanize her, I figured I would get a picture and check out here for advice first.

I went out to get a picture thinking it would just be a weepy vent, but it looks pretty awful, almost like a hole where her vent should be.

I check on the chickens daily and all I had seen before today was that her backside was looking a bit bare of feathers.

Any ideas?

(Sorry if the picture isn't good enough, I'm very pregnant right now and not that adept at chicken tracking)

You need to wash and clean that before infection comes in right away and possibly bandage it. Iodine works well with some neosporin and hydrogen peroxide. Hope I can help

We have had roosters mate with our hens and make some really horrible open wounds. We separated them and gave them time to recuperate, now they have no scabs and have grown new feathers.

Chickens have amazing recuperative powers....IF you separate them and keep her away from the others in, say, a dog crate or even a box. If it were me, I'd keep her in the house where I could keep a good eye on her. Clean that wound and apply antibiotic ointment (NON-analgesic) or even Blu-kote. She needs some TLC and time to recover.

As someone else posted, I have had hens with horrible looking wounds that recovered completely, with some basic care.

I had a young rooster that had a hole pecked into his backside. The other chickens just followed him around pecking at the wound. I took him out and and caged him separately for a few weeks. All healed and he went back out to the pen. Haven't seen any issues since.

I cleaned her up as best I could and sprayed with antibacterial spray. I have no way of separating her as of yet as the only cage we have is being used for chicks. I'll figure something out in the morning. Really hope she perks up, she's a feisty little bugger.
