Cleo, my head girl, a five-year-old Plymouth Barred Rock, was in the nest box way too long this afternoon. I went to check on her and there were small white squirmy things around her vent, which is red and inflamed looking. I feel completely horrible that I hadn't noticed before today.

They're less than a quarter inch long, white, pointy on both ends, and about as thick as a...hmm. Thicker than a hair, but less thick than a strand of yarn. Maybe a strand of cord? I looked up treatments, washed her off thoroughly, put antibiotic cream and poultry wound wash on her. Then I searched on here, bought Safeguard and dosed her 9 ml, since she's about 4.5 lbs.

She's still perky, and eating and drinking. Haven't seen her poop. Have I mentioned I feel terrible? Is there anything else I can/should do? Help please!

Oh, and I also cleaned out their coop completely, and put in all new sweet PDZ and shavings. It's 92 degrees here with approximately 107% humidity--super fun.
Cleo's in a dog crate within the run, with water.

I thought that maggots were short and fatter. Ok, though--I'll grab her and keep going. I haven't seen that many flies around the coop/run and they're out in the yard all day, but it's been really wet/hot/rainy/humid here, so I'll go with that. Permetherin. Thank you!

Did you really give 9ml of Safeguard - if you did, can you reference the post where you got your dosing information?

Safeguard dosage is .25 (1/4)ml per pound of weight given for 5days in a row. A 4.5lb chicken would get a dose of 1.125ml per day.

Photos of the worms and wound would be most helpful.

Sorry about that--no, not 9ml. It was .9.

I brought her in last night and picked as many as I could see out. This morning when the feed store opened, I got some permethrin and made a wound wash, trying for the 1:200 they recommended. I washed her once at 8:00 and there were more to pick out, and then once a half hour ago, this time syringing it into the wound. I'll try to get pics. I feel so bad for her.

I was hoping you left a decimal out:D

It sounds like you are doing what you can:hugs Flushing the wound to remove all the maggots out is most important. Don't beat yourself up, this time of year with the hot weather, the flies are terrible, Flystrike can happen very quickly - maggots can hatch out in less than 24hrs.

Since I don't seem to be able to get them all out--should I make a sitz bath of the permethrin solution and soak her bum in it?

You can try the Permethrin as a sitz bath, some people use epsom salts or put them in a soapy bath water (use Dawn).

You may need to use tweezers to dig inside the wound, but the bath may make them emerge from their hiding places.
