barred rock with worms(?) on vent

Well, I've syringed and tweezed it a couple of times, and there are far fewer of them, but still not all gone. I got her to drink some nutri-drenched water, but no eating. She's resting on a towel in the dog crate. My poor girl.

Unfortunately there is usually a reason why they have been subject to fly strike. usually there is some abdominal swelling that causes poop to soil the feathers below the vent. Flies lay eggs into the poop, the maggots hatch and start to eat into the inflames skin and flesh beneath. Whatever caused the soiling (and probably swelling)in the first place may unfortunately prove fatal in the long run, but you can only tackle one thing at a time and getting rid of the maggots and eggs is the first stage.

Can you soak her in some soapy water, salt bath or you can use betadine in your water - try to get the wound with the maggots submerged somehow. I understand she may fight you and panic. If she's difficult, gently swaddle her in a thin towel or fabric (to capture her wings), leaving the area you really want to soak exposed, then put her in the water. Having a helper would be a good idea, do you have a family member, neighbor or friend that can lend you a hand?

It's o.k. for the moment if she doesn't eat, but getting fluids into her like you are is good. Hang in there!

Try giving her some long periods of rest between treatments. Offer some cooked egg chopped up, and they usually are tempted by chicken feed made wet with water. You can spike that with a few drops of the nutridrench.

Treat the nest box she was in— remove the bedding, and spray with permethrin. I had a young hen who laid paper thin shelled eggs daily after being injured by a dog. They would always crack in the nest box, and made a mess that attracted flies. I had to clean it daily and spray it with permethrin. Poopy vents in summerime or a wound can also attract the flies. Good luck with your hen.

I soaked her in warm epson salted and dawn water. About 15 minutes. She struggled a bit a first then relaxed. I did see any other maggots after I was done this time.
She ate about half of the egg and drank a bit more. I've got her on a towel.
Thanks for the help and support, all--really appreciate it. I hope she'll pull through.
