I recently got an order of 10 barred rock pullets. The company had the option to get a "FREE Rare Chick Breed Special". So, of course...I had too!

Well I had trouble at first figuring out what breed that special little brown chick was. Turned out to be a pretty little Speckled Sussex! I also am assuming it will most probably end up being a "he" since it was free and all!
I had a plan of using any roosters for meat. Needless to say I've grown fond of our sweet special chick.

Then my husband brought up "Well if it turns out to be a rooster, then I wonder what the mix will be like?"

I was wondering if anyone else might have an idea or pictures? I can't even being to wonder what a cross between a barred rock and speckled sussex would be like?

Here is a picture of our young flock, with the sussex in the middle.

You get black sex links. The boy chicks will have a white head spot and grow to be barred and the girl chicks will be all black when hatched. The girls will grow to be mostly black with some color usually showing on their breast.

Thank you! I am really curious, of course that's something I shouldn't have to worry about for a while. Who knows I may end up with a hen after all??

I have the same question!! I have a hatchling from a speckled Sussex roo and either a golden comet hen or a barred rock hen. Problem is that it looks exactly like the broody golden comet. I didn't think that that outcome was possible. Did OP ever hatch any chicks?!

Just wanted to correct what was said you do not get sexlinks from barred rock males a black sexlink is created by a rhode island red or new Hampshire male x with a barred rock hen, barred males x with speckled susex makes a mutt not that theres anything wrong with that.

You get sex linked chicks when the mother is the barred parent, not the male. And you can get sex links from many different birds with barred hens. I've had them with EE sires, Cochin sires and Silver Phoenix sires over Barred Rock hens.

Yes that's what I said and just came across this and figured I throw in my 2 cents even though it's an older thread.

I know you said that, however, I wanted to make sure that it was understood that a sex link could be made with many different breed males over BR females or Dominique females or Cuckoo Marans females, not just a red male.

I had four birds out of a Silver Phoenix over BR hens. One solid black pullet, three that at first looked like ghosty barred BR pullets, until I realize their tails were too long and their combs were pink at 3 weeks old. Also, a Cochin/Silkie cross male sired four chicks. Three solid black pullets and one barred male, all with poufy heads. So, the males, as you'd expect, were all barred from their barred mothers.
