So i purchased both chicks from rural king, as unsexed barred rocks. Did some research and was certain that rocky is a roo and oreo a pullet.. but now i saw pictures of barred rocks on here that have barring. These chicks are now about 4 weeks and no barring, just white tips on the wings and some white on their faces, and a white line down the chest and stomach. The rest solid black... we did try vent sexing and got the same 1and roo 1and pullet but i am concerned about not having any barring. I was really looking forward to the barred coloring amongst my chickens. Thoughts? I thought maybe they were mislabeled?

You may have to wait until they get a little older. A way to tell when they are under a week old is to feather sex them by looking at the secondary flight feathers. Males will have all one length and females will have two lengths.

What about as far as being barred rocks? Do some barred rocks stay black for a while? I like having a male and female. I mainly want the hardiness and coloring of the barred rocks.

They don't look 4 weeks... Unless they have a lot more feathers hiding in there? The one with the white face doesn't look like a barred rock chick to me at all. I only have three though, so maybe it is a variation.
