Your B Rocks are Beauties

Hi; boy what pictures of fantastic free range old fashion HERITAGE Barred Plymouth Rocks. This has been in the last seven days some of the nices barred rocks I have seen in years.

Is Plymouth Rocks scare or rare? YES YES YES

The most popular Plymouth Rock in large fowl is or was the Whites but the barreds are making a come back and maybe as you who see how pretty they are in thier clean black and white feather patterns more will want them this spring.

Next is Buff Plymouth Rocks very rare maybe 100 to 150 alive in the USA today in the winter time.

Next Columbian maybe 100 if we are lucky very few good breeders but we are trying to import some good ones from Canada. It will take about two more years of work.

Next Silver Pencilled Rocks maybe 100 to be fair. Hard breed to keep the color true got to really watch your breeders or your color will get bad on you.

The last is the Partridge about 75 to 100 alive during breeding season. However, there are a couple of good breeders who have really improved them.

Now this sounds sad dont it? That is about how many are out there so we need help if you have room in your hen house to adopt a color of this old breed.

We will try to help you locate the top breeders and we will try to get chicks or eggs to you if we can. We will be alot better off in about two years as we get more folks to raise them and start NET WORKING or sharing your birds with each other like old garden seeds.

Now you may say I got a catalog and I can order all these colors from this hatchery. That is true and their are thousands of these chickens out there maybe 10,000 of them.

But are they the old fashion Heritage or Vintage Plymouth Rocks breed to the standard of Perfection. NO

Hope this helps you understand our cause to prevent these old breeds from going to out of production.

We have articles on how to breed them for shape and for color. We have breeders who are willing to teach you how to do it. All we need is just one percent of you to JUST DO IT.

More will come as months go buy. Its a great time to be into Back Home Chickens. You dont have to show them. Just help us keep the numbers up so others can get them when their time comes. bob

Bob-Hello there-I follow your posts with great interest. thanks for all the time you put in on it
I am in Canada- western part
Any chance of a source for the Ex quality Columbian Rocks in Canada and particularly good Barred Rocks?

cheers
grace

Bob, this rooster came out of my hatchery BRs, a McMurray deep bodied rooster and a hen who was a generation or two removed from hatchery stock. He was named "Bob", coincidentally, LOL, hands down the best looking bird ever to come out of my flock, but I wasn't holding my breath for another one like him. Another member hatched him out of eggs I sent her or I'd have kept him here. Of course, he still doesn't measure up to the Good Shepard types, but I was very pleased with him when she posted these pics of him as a youngster then grown. I love the show quality types, but I would have been very happy if most of mine had barring that looked closer to this guy:

I do plan to add some better looking Rocks into my group next year, but we love our Rocks, both the barred and the blues and black.

Robert,
I have a small backyard flock, not a large breeding farm, but I really love the Barred Rocks and would love to be a part of preserving this beautiful heritage breed. I would love to have more information about how to be a part. My Dad has a larger farm (he mostly sells eggs) that he does as a retirment hobby. I might also be able to encourage him to become a part as well. Do you have eggs? or can you put me in touch with someone who does?
I see that you are also in Alabama, but i looked it up and you are far, far away. I live up in the TN/GA/AL line.
I would really love to be a small part of this preservation effort.

Thanks,
Robert Norris

I am in Cartersville, Ga....not too far from you. I have some heritage BR birds and will be glad to help you get started. Right now the girls are only about 18-19 weeks old and not laying yet. Hoping that changes soon. Will definitely have eggs and breeding pens set up by Spring time

Here is a pix of one of my cockerels and a few pullets
