Well, I meant... Do they let you hold them, or do you have to chase them around? Will they eat out of your hand? I just don't like birds that are afraid of me, is all.

Well, I don't really hold mine.

When I dust them I have no problem with them. Yes, they would eat out of my hand if I had treats. Of course almost all my chickens will though. For example, today I was outside with a cookie in my hand and suddenly I had about 20 new best friends.
lol.png
I sat down at the picnic table and they ALL came over and took a bite of the cookie, and I had to go get another one.

That is hysterical! Tomorrow, hold one for me, will ya, and tell me how it goes? Haha.

You are full of such great knowledge! You and Bob. You are experts. It really amazes and impresses me. DH and I are just so clueless. So you really do like these? Where could I get some? I am not really new to chickens, but very new to all this big stuff. I have much to learn from you experienced breeders!

If you want "pets," I would refer you to Delawares! Oh my gosh, they are just so friendly! They are like lap puppies in chicken clothing!

Look at this thread, for an example....

edited to add: I am no expert, believe me! I am relatively new to the poultry world myself and am still learning!

Never sell yourself short Kathy, there are a LOT of us who follow your threads. I know I've learned a lot from the research you've done.

Awwww, thanks, Terry! I just like to research, ya know. I love the history of this strain of Barred Rocks and have enjoyed reading about them..... FUN research! Other subjects I research when I learn of something or experience something myself..... such as the rare td dwarfing gene. Very interesting stuff out there in cyber world, just gotta be persistent and keep digging around. I like to share what I learn, just in case someone else finds it interesting or helpful. Most probably consider it boring!

I better be careful what I post if you are following me around.

I didn't know anyone followed me.

I read some place "the gene that makes them speckled is related to the sweetness gene..."

I have hatchery Dominiques and Barred Rocks. Both are very sweet. My children love them. I have a video on my phone where I was trying to film on the chickens' eye level. One of my BR pullets hopped on my knee as if to say "You gave me a perch, now pet me!" Our "mystery" rooster from a mixed assortment has a straight comb but is way smaller than the BR cockerals. "Little Dude" is developingthe tail and body type of a Dominique. Little Dude now has a fan club at the school after his visit to the fifth grade class. He let every child hold him and he behaved like a perfect little gentleman.

It seems that birds from breeders can be nicer than hatchery birds. My hatchery Delawares are meanies! If you don't have a breeder near you, don't be afraid to buy a few hatchery birds to try a breed. In my short experience I'd say don't "write off" a breed if the hatchery birds aren't wonderful. My two Dominique cross girls are half Ameracuana (parents were all hatchery birds). These girls went on strike just after Thanksgiving and didn't lay again until almost February. Since then they've laid like champs. The two girls give me around ten eggs per week.

Just remember: eat the personality contest loosers!
