PLEASE NOTE:Ok, so First of all I do not care if my chickens are not perfect, this is just a question out of my interest.

I was free ranging my chickens, and then one of my Barred Rocks, Rocky, came to me so I picked her up. I was petting them and noticed she had some green shine on her feathers like certain breeds have a lot of.

I did not think Barred Rocks had green, I thought they were just black and white. Is this normal or what?

~Once again I’m not concerned just interested~

A lot of chickens with black feathers will have that green shine to them. I've hatched out a couple of Jersey giants and people you see them will ask if they are 'Green chickens' But they're actually just black. This ins't a very good example but you can see some purple and green on my JG's feathers in here

Yep, my girls can vary from blue to green to purple. I haven't seen a whole lot of perfect birds (And I'm not familiar with the BR standard of perfection and I think it's lovely). But they all are still perfect.:love

Can I figure though that by you would recognize a cockerel if you saw one? Sorry, have to ask.

I see the green. My FBCM are the same... and I even select FOR it in my breeding program. :)

Do you mean would I know if she's a boy? It's ok to ask, I don't mind :)
Yes, I know she's a girl because her comb/wattles didn't turn red or really get big until a month ago, while my naked neck cockerel already has the same redness/size of hers right now, and he's only a month and a half while Rocky is 5 months.

Yep green is the sheen you want to see on black feathers ! that's the good thing ! usually it is not so good to see a purple sheen. so be happy
Best ,
Karen

Ok good, neither of my two have purple, just green! But I'm curious...why is purple bad? I'm still pretty new to chickens. (Only had them for 5 months)

I have a Black Star, Victoria, who has green feathers. I don't think my Barred Rock has any green. Your hen must be very soft if she has green feathers. She may loose the green feathers when the feathers get old or dirty. Roosters usually have green tail feathers. I think green feathers on a chicken makes them look prettier. :)
