Barred Rocks or Cuckoo Marans?

This really bothers me. Folks who want a pure BR or Marans flock are getting crossbreeds from the hatcheries, apparently. I have two hatchery BR hens and some hens that came from eggs hatched from a friend's flock. Mine came from Ideal and hers came, originally, from McMurray. Thank goodness all mine had nice yellow legs, though they are faded from laying now. All their progeny have good leg color as well. I'd be rather miffed if I got white legged BRs, knowing they were not pure. White skin is usually dominant so there were white skinned breeder somewhere in the line for that to happen.

I will call today and find out where our feedstore gets their chicks from. I didn't mean to stir up a hornets nest with my post. Our feedstore gets rares all the time so mine are possibly Marans not just crossbreeds. I know he told me he buys an assortment everytime and it includes rares and commons. He doesn't pick what breeds, he just buys an assortment from the hatchery and it includes LF and bantams as well. He sorts them out after they all arrive together, and like I said, he just groups them all together if they resemble a breed. I know just the other day I went in and he had silkies and bantam cochins all together and called them all cochins.

When I bought these girls and the roo, I asked them for 1 roo and 5 pullets... The one that they gave me and said was a roo turned out to be a pullet and one of the ones they said was a pullet turned out to be a roo.. LOL

It worked out fine though... When I brought them home when they were chicks they didn't look like BRs to me after looking at pics of BR chicks. They did look a lot more like Maran chicks with more white on their chests. It doesn't really matter to me though, I just love them.

Scenario 1:

The breeder didn't know the chicks were crossbreeds and gave you what she believed she had.

Scenario 2:

The breeder knew about the mishap but didn't care and didn't think you'd mind.

**Scenario 3:
The breeder received her chicks from a hatchery who had bred Barred Plymouth Rocks to Cuckoo Marans which gave all chicks the white legs and skin. The breeder assumed they were all Barred Plymouth Rocks (not knowing the breed standard) or that they were full Cuckoo Marans and bred them together. The generation away from the hatchery (your chicks) the crossbreed between the Marans and Barred Plymouth Rocks are becoming apparent thanks to the mix of white and yellow skinned birds in the flock.

** = the most likely scenario.

My first chickens were the brown egg layer special from McMurray. I got marans and rocks in the mix- we had some really really dark eggs. The birds were all small for their type though- and not nearly as fluffy as others I have seen.
I only kept one of the rocks (she's too dumpy to give away- but sweet as can be), and she has white legs- but she's been laying for 2 years. Can't remember if they used to be yellow.
