Barred Rocks!!

I love my barred rock hen! She is quite the spunky little chicken! My first flock of chickens were barred rocks so it makes the breed special to me <3 :love
I love my BR hen too she's gonna be 2 in a week she lets me pet her even In the nesting box. And she's the only one in my flock that's been broody. I have silver laces and comets and she's the sweetest so now we are raising a BR rooster. Pictured above in this thread can't wait till he's grown. We are giving one of the two away to a friend

Ok I need some advice,,, I got 3 BR hens December 2 nd so now they will be 9 weeks on Super Bowl Sunday. My question is are they old enough to with stand the cold. I am more than ready to put them out because they are getting big and messy in the dog cage in my living room ugh. The only problem is feeding them their chick food and getting picked on by the other 10 adults. I have learned my lesson getting chicks in December that's for sure. Any suggestions?

Adapt them over a week's period. Move them to an unheated garage as step one, perhaps. Provide them with a step down of the temperature environment. Hang a 90 watt bulb in the outdoor pen, if you're able, for the first few nights. Just things to acclimate them. Reduce the bulb to a 60 watt bulb for another few nights. It is tough going from a constant 70 degree living room environment to suddenly be plunged into a 20 degree environment.

Lesson learned, huh? Yup. We NEVER brood inside the house. Just cannot. To each his own.

Yes, your pullets are too young to be with adults. What's the plan for a separate grow out place?

Ok well I could put them in the basement as a step down its cooler down there but not cold. As far as introducing them to the others we usually let them free range in the late spring early summer and have like a chick pen separate from the others but next to the others. What about putting the whole kennel in the big cage so they are with the others but protected it's I the 30's now are they are fully feathered I just don't know yet

I guess I just gonna leave them in for another month that's probably best.

I love my Barred Rocks

I'm sorry to say that this isn't a Barred Rock rooster. His parents might have been but he's a cross.

400
. This is my new barred rock rooster I've wanted so bad. Look at the bars on his new feathers. I think it's definitely my boy yeah!!!

I took my 9 week old barred rock hens out to the pen yesterday to intriduce them to the other girls needless to say the babies got stuck in the coop so after a few hours I brought them back in and fed and watered them. Ugh this is a night mate till spring I guess. I know it takes time to get the whole pecking order re established so they pick and fight but the 3 9week olds couldn't get to the food and water
