Hello all, I have a little silkie chick (Name is Pearl if you are interested in names.) It was originally black but as the chick has been forming feathers, it looks like there is barring coming in.

The Silkie flock the chick came from consists of: Buff Roo, Paint hens, Blue Hens.

Is my Silkie a barred Silkie? If so, how did that happen with the types of parents. I don't know which hen is the mother.

Does the flock have any chickens that are not Silkies? Or any access to other roosters?

I definitely see some Silkie traits in that chick, but I think I'm seeing normal-textured feathers instead of silkie ones.

Doesn't look like barring to me.
I was thinking that too. I do see the white, but it doesn't look right for barring. I think something else is going on-- maybe black with silver leakage, which could perhaps come from a cross of Buff with Blue or Paint.

Ya not enough feathers for me to get a good look but it looks more like the white is running the wrong direction. Like down the middle shaft portion

The white is going across the tips of the feathers, but it is so faint that the pictures cannot capture it I guess. Once the chick forms more, I will try to get more pictures.
Good idea, getting more pictures later as it develops. Sometimes things are much clearer at a later age.

No, the Silkies are in an enclosed coop and run all by themselves.
Here are some full pictures of the chick. Not to show barring, but to see if it still doesn't look full silkie.

I think those look like normal-textured feathers, not silkied ones, but I can't be positive at this age. The older it gets, probably the more clear it will be, whether it actually has silkie feathers or whether it has smooth/normal feathers.

Silkie feathers are a recessive trait, so two parents with silkie feathers should never be able to produce a chick with normal feathers.

My gray one and black one have feathers like that. Their 3 buff siblings have Silkie feathers.
