We recently purchased Blue Giant Cochin chicks and have been curious about their wild antics. They are all pullets (we hope) and seem to be very active, already having what I refer to as "the stink eye stand off", sort of gentle playfighting followed by a stare down. I don't remember our other breeds doing this until older. Is this typical of the breed?

I would love to hear any experiences you have had with this beautiful breed, suggestions, or advice. Thank you.

My giant cochin chicks were so quiet and passie that I had to separate them from the othr chicks as athey were getting pecked. I don't remember any play fighting. I had what turned out to be 3 roosters and 4 pullets in the brooder. Even today they are the quietest of all my chickens and by far the gentlest I just love my cochins.

I'm huge fan of cochins, I have bantams and not the standard cochins. I see a lot of that stare down behavior in the boys, they also will bump chests and occasionally give each other a peck, I'm sure it's all a game to them, estabishing a pecking order already at a young age:) I have some month olds in a large brooder right now with some white silkies, the silkies do their own thing, kind of keep to themselves then you have this small group of black cochins running around like a bunch of maniacs, it's hilarious to watch. It' so funny to see those little bodies move so fast. Cochins are wonderful birds with very good personalities, they make great pets, showbirds and are excellent broodies and mothers. Blue cochins are beautiful especially the large fowl! Good luck:)

I have 3 Black Cochin pullets. They on occasion do exactly what you're talking about. I think they're establishing a pecking order between them.

They're the quietest, sweetest of all my chickens.
