Basque Hens, Euskal Oiloa (MYSTERY BREED !)

I don't think it's because you are new.

I am having to use webmail and it's less than ideal! I think we are straight now! A reference to the article would be much appreciated! I am certainly happy to have the info shared. We are lucky we know so much about these beauties!

is the Euskal Oiloa an egg laying breed, meat bird, dual purpose, ornamental???
I'm getting an Euskal cockerel this weekend bc I like the idea of having a friendly rooster, but at the same time, I keep chickens for the eggs, so I'm hoping that they produce a decent amount per year...

Congratulations Rivers! You will love them.

They are a dual purpose but the hens lay lots of big shiny brown eggs. the breed standard is 255 a year and I think we get that about that. I have had these 3 years and your rooster probably comes from our line.

There's more info and tons of pics in this BYC thread, and I answered a bit more on egg laying.

Thanks Skeffling!
They're (the kind lady has offered me two cockerels!) coming from a farm in the Cambridge area and we're meeting tomorrow for the pickup. I'm told that these guys like to play! sooooo exciting!

That's great. They are sweet birds and the roosers seem to love to be picked up and hugged tight. I have one young one year old rooster that hops up onto my knee if I call him! Even if I have a hold of a another roo, he hops up! They love treats to and if they are a little shy of you to start with (unlikely) that will help. Maybe it is Paula that has them. I am happy for you! You will be hooked!

What a great Video. I wish understood it all. I think the second box of chicks were euskal Oiloa Marradune, then what did they say about the adults? I love all the Spanish chickens, they are so showy and proud and beautiful! What a treat! Thanks for sharing the video.
