Bath time?

I gave a couple of poo-caked chicks baths in the sink. I ran luke-warm water and gently scrubbed with a wash-cloth. I then brought out the hair-dryer and dried them on low. They really seemed to enjoy that.

this is true... BUT I won't fault you for just wanting to be a good chickie mom... spot cleaning or, for pasty butt, running a small stream of warm water on just the problem area works well w/using a warm dryer or heat lamp after to prevent chill.

Be sure you wash your hands very very good and use some hand sanitizer after you handle your chicks. I am just recovering after 4 horrible days of salmonella poisoning. I have never been so sick in my life!!

When mine were smaller I wiped them with a warm washcloth, and dried them good before putting them back in the brooder.. Now they are 5 weeks old and I just had one poop on the other (she was on the perch), and it was the runny kind... I tried to wipe her off, she didn't like it much, so I just turned on the faucet and washed her down with palmolive dish soap, rinsed her off really good, then took out my blow dryer.. she actually liked it! LOL! I just couldn't stand watching her run around with poop all over her, plus when people come to visit, they don't want to hold chickens with poop on them.. I know I wouldn't! She's all clean and still loves me! Hope that helps!

I agree with the above, when I get a nasty chick, I take them to the sink (dont fill it just turn on the warm water) and run their feet or butt or whatever needs it and wash with my hands. I then blow dry them on low and they REALLY like that. A good "spot" cleaning does the trick.

My little one had pasty butt. I washed her with warm running water and a tiny bit of soap. I gently blow dried her completely. She hasn't had pasty butt since.

I have on more than one occassion given my chicks and ducklings a spot bath. Pasty butt, or just plain stinky feet and hiney. As long as you dry them well and get them back under the brooder light, and away from any draft, they should be fine.
