CDeans, The back-up power supplies sound like a good idea. In this situation, it probably wouldn't have worked 'cuz it was so long (3 days) but I'm going to look into getting some for future power flickers.

We did have a small generator, but it was barely enough to keep a small heater running for one room. (The lowest it got was the 40's) My in-laws came over with a brand new 5700 watt generator that should get us through any more major outages.

3 days of very little sleep has really taken it's toll and losing these babies has just hit me hard. It's the first time in a long time that my bators are empty.

Sorry to be so glum, G'night all.

I know EXACTLY how you feel! I lost power for about 7 hours on Friday night (of course, when it is the coldest!) and I have about 40-50 eggs in my bators(some from PoultryLady too!) as well as some of my own Buff Orps and some EXPENSIVE BLRW eggs.....I'm hoping they are ok! I am going to candle in a day or two after they have had a couple days to settle back into their warm home

Really sorry about your loss and disappointment.
I could have dealt with that, but "...4 kids (2,3,10,11) w/out electricity, heat & hot water... for three days...
I'd've left home, alone.

So sorry!! I know how excited you were on the New Years hatch. There is not a whole lot you could do in a case like this. But, our hearts goes out to you and I know the kids must be disappointed too.

Just keep everyone, chicks included, warm and safe and we will cross our fingers for no more power outages for the rest of winter. Big hug!

Im so sorry but hopefully you will fill them back up and that will help lift your spirits...

PUT towels and blankets in the dryer, get them as hot as you can stand it and keep it running till the electricity goes off. when it does fold up a towel and put it on top of the bators and cover them all with the big blanket. DONT open it after you do this. Just keep them covered.
