Bay Area BYCers!

It wasn't fun having chicks in my guest room... chicks in the garage... a grow out pen outside... and my mature flock in their run. It was entirely too much work. Feeding and watering took an hour and a half every day!

Nope, this year I'm hatching only one set of eggs that will coincide with the arrival of my other chicks. Hopefully by the end of February I'll have Olive Eggers from Wynette and Blue Wheaten Marans cooking in the 'bator. My W/BW/SW Ameraucana, Silver Ameraucana and RIR chicks will join them in one big outdoor brooder until everyone is ready to move in with the big kids.

I can't lose any more hair this year over the chicken stress!

Oooh, I have an olive egger from Wynette that was hatched out by Gryeyes, and she's a really pretty and very good-natured bird! She's almost at POL so I'll let you know how her eggs turn out. I asked Wynette about the parentage, and she said the mother was a penedesenca x blue americana, and sire was a BCM roo. I can't wait to see her eggs! They should be coming soon... she's 24 weeks and is getting REALLY red in the face and has been very vocal this past week. Her name, of course, is Olivia.

Is the end of February when you are getting our olive eggers from Wynette? I'm trying to plan our brooder space, too! I think that I'm going to have to build a new one that can handle more chicks!

Debi, I did speak with Wynette and told her of our hopes of brooding all the babies together. She did say, a couple of weeks ago now, that her OEs were starting to give her eggs again and that an late February/early March shipment might be possible. We are #1 on her list for hatching eggs, too.

To those who are going to the Stockton show, I am writing to say hello and to introduce our documentary project. If you are going to be at both Stockton and The Crossroads Show, we'd love to meet you and learn about what you do. Here is our posting:

Los Angeles based production company is seeking participants for a documentary which focuses on passionate individuals who compete poultry. Specifically we are looking for competitors planning to attend The Crossroads of America Poultry Show October 28-30, 2011 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. From the seasoned veteran to the novice, people from all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome to apply. Our documentary is character-centered, which means we focus first on the competitors, their drive, zeal, love of the sport, and then secondly, on their birds.

Applicants should be prepared to have us video at scheduled, mutually agreed upon intervals the full process of preparing for the meet, including but not necessarily limited to breeding, chick and bird selection, and the final preparation for competition.

If you are interested, please contact us at [email protected]. We will ask you to complete a short application and will provide instructions to submit a brief video.

For those applicants planning to attend the Stockton show on January 30, 2011 we may ask, after review of your application to meet and video selected candidates while we are there.

Thanks.

Nicole

I was advised to ask here, but it's barely related to chickens so hopefully it's alright.

My GF and I will be visiting Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park and Humboldt State University in Arcata sometime in the next month or two, but I've never been up there. We only have a day for each town so besides the college tours, what else should we see as prospective future residents? Any good places to eat?

And I guess you could tell me about the local chicken scene, too. Cross-posted this in the NorCal thread for maximum question answeringness.

Our very favorite place for deep dish pizza is "The New Yorker" in Petaluma. It's on Petaluma Blvd. near Western Avenue, downtown Petaluma. Family run restaurant, cash only (last I heard) .. also great Italian entrees.

In Cotati, "Mike's" is great for hamburgers. They are near the highway exit, 101/116 in the shopping center - turn right after the off ramp, and a quick left.

Of course, there's always "In-N-Out" in Petaluma, Rohnert Park, and Santa Rosa.

Lots of places to explore and eat that we can tell you about as you settle in the area!

My "little" brother lives in Eureka but just moved from Arcata. If you want I can email him for great sites to see. If so PM me.

OK. I can't resist! Here's another pic of my new chickies with my oldest granddaughter. She was holding them in her lap and they just ran up to her neck, snuggled in, and then promptly went to sleep! I've never seen anything like it! She was so enchanted with the babies she wouldn't even move her head for fear of disturbing them. When I asked her a question she wiggled her eyebrows up and down for "yes". It was the cutest thing ever! There are 2 chicks on each side and 1 in her lap.

Even when they pooped on her she didn't get upset! She just said "oops, there's another one to clean up." *yes I know I'm gushing..., sorry*
