I know! Only 49 now though and I assume I lost a few with these temperature extremes I had a couple days ago. I did a test hatch 2 months ago in a friend's bator, cause I was still working on mine, and I still have 5 babies from that hatch that aren't sold. Three of them are boys though.

I owe AnnaRaven an EE pullet or 2 so I'm hoping the 2 I think are girls really are. It's obvious that at least 3 are definitely boys though! None of the pure ameraucanas made it in the first hatch but I didn't really expect them to since the girls were too young yet. The test did prove my beautiful black ameraucana boy is fertile though! This time around only one of my pure am eggs didn't develop. Keeping my fingers crossed for both our hatches!!!

I know at least one other person on this thread was hatching too. How are your babies doing? Wish I could remember who it was...

I hope you feel better soon!
Good luck with your hatch!

I did try to candle, but gave up.

I have 55 eggs that I can't hardly see through. Some not at all. Most not at all.

I'm pretty sure the AM egg I got at the show did nothing, and at least 2 of the Marans eggs I won look clear, but I started to not feel well enough to go through, so put all of them back and closed it up.

Hey, Im in Petaluma, previously known as the chicken capitol. I am new to chicken parenting. I have a Columbina Wyandotte named Large Marge, a Brown Leghorn, Ruby and 2 Barred Rocks Petal and Berta. Having a great time with them. I too now have the chicken bug and want some silkies next. Oh and Welcome. Glad to see someone closer to my area on here.

Yes my ameraucana eggs are very difficult to candle. I can't see into my marans eggs at all although I don't have any of those in the bator right now. How do you see into your marans eggs? I know, I need a super duper bright light. I guess I'll have to build one of those now too.

Welcome Patricia Jane! I never knew that Petaluma was considered the chicken capitol.
Good luck with your flock!

Good work this first time around! Such excitement!

I got two babies today that I put in with mama tonight. Stirred them all up after they were settled in at dark, and when all the Splash Marans chicks were out and about, put in the two new ones and shut off the lights. Gave mama a minute and when I put the light back on, every last chick was tucked in snug under her. Guess she can't count, especially in the dark!

The more the merrier. I guess! Hope she feels the same way in the morning when she sees two of "her" chicks are a different color altogether than they were yesterday...

The gal I got them from also ordered the "Rare Breed Special" from Greenfire Farms. WOWie. She had received three lav orps, a silver orp, two pumpkin hulseys, a blue marans, two coronation sussex, and I can't remember the others. Just gorgeous chicks! And do you see those Jubilee Orps on the website! (yes, you!) $999/pair! Holy cow, I can keep myself happily in chickens for years for that kind of moolah...

Picking up Cheryl's friend's two Speckled Sussex hens tomorrow! I'll be in Emoryville at Ikea doing the chicken deal in the parking lot...! (Feels sneaky, somehow!

Wolftracks, hope you feel better soon!

I am from Sonoma county also. We have around 20 chickens. One rooster for now. But he is in a seperate pen, because he was harrassing the girls too much. We have an assorted flock including a few mutts. It seems that word got out in chicken land last year and all kinds of stray chicks showed up at our place

I know some of them came from our next door neighbor, but I think the others arrived via neighborhood cat

One escaped from a neighbor who raised fighting cocks. It took her about 4 months to assimilate into the flock. She got left behind, when they moved.
