Worming: How often do you all worm around here? I just bought the products: 1st for roundworms, then two weeks later the ivermectin for general worming... I was thinking once a year in late spring.
Comments/experiences?
Thanks!

I've heard it suggested to worm when they're molting since you aren't getting eggs anyways, so you don't have to worry about not eating the eggs (that you aren't getting) for 2 weeks.

For worming and ALL insect problems, I use diatomaceous earth. It's available at feed stores; be sure to get food grade. It's safe for human consumption (good detoxifier), good for worming animals, and controls fleas, lice, ticks, mites, bed bugs, and garden insects. It's completely organic; it's microscopic, fossilized diatoms. As insects crawl over it, their exoskeleton is lacerated, they dehydrate and die. Kills snails, slugs, but doesn't harm earthworms. It's used in cleaners (mildly abrasive), whitening toothpastes, and in foods (ie flour) as anticaking and bug control. You can put it directly on plants and animals. My chickens (nearly 200) got mites; once I spread DE, I haven't had a problem. There's a wealth of information online. It's effective, much cheaper than any medicine (I paid $38 for a 50 lb bag), and longer lasting, as it doesn't wear out. They will eat it, so you will need to reapply periodically. Once eaten it will kill all bugs in their system, and will be present in their feces, thus cutting down on flies. I'm looking forward to using it for earwig and aphid control in my garden. And, you don't have to worry about when to use it, and there's no withdrawal period for the eggs. In the garden it aids in water retention (they are hollow) but also helps with drainage. Again; check it out online. I've been very pleased so far.

Ok, 13 are out and 11 more are zipped/pipped. Here's a pic of the first 3...

Once a year in the winter, so I don't lose egg production

Cheryl, do you do this for the younger ones, too? Wondering if I should wait a few more weeks until all are at least 8 weeks old, then get the whole flock at once.

Hi ChickenLIttle! All info I have read from Veterinary sites says DE is great for external parasites, not consistantly for internal. Have been using it for months for their coop and dust baths, and no mites or ticks, so I love that!

Sunny, cute chickies! Congrats!

Jeremy, Dolly is doing great! Mama kept all the chicks warm during the cold spell, and all are thriving.
