Bay Area BYCers!

Oh, now you have the bug too, Steph! LOL! What are you going to hatch first? What kind of incubator did you get? You're going to have so much fun with it.

We're presently less than 24 hours into lockdown, and we got our first pip about 3:30 this afternoon! A little porcelain d'uccle. Hoping we awaken to a chick or two in the morning! This is only day 19 so I was really surprised we had a pip.

There's also another 30 eggs in the other bator that are on day 7.

Anybody want chicks? hehehe.

Hi Jerrilynn! I got a Hovabator Genesis, with egg turner. I got it from ebay, brand new. It looks good. I need to set it up and see it run so I can leave feedback.

I should really do a test hatch of just a few eggs. Otherwise, I plan to hatch the barnevelder eggs from tls_ranch I won at chickenstock. I guess I should see what hatching eggs might be available locally.

Where do you all get your eggs?

Help! What is on my light Brahma's head? She is the 2nd in charge--but this looks like feather pecking, no?? She is bigger than everyone except the two new SS hens... I looked her over for mites, but can't find any, and I keep DE dusted all over the coop and fenced run (for when they decide to stay in). Ideas?? (Wow! My new Android phone take awesome pictures! Check out the feather detail!)

Ok..I get the addiction now. I am in the mids of my first non broody hatch. Watching chicks emerge is awesome. So far 4 Blehm Black Ameracauna, with a mess of Wellies, OE, and Barnies hopefully to come. Two Wellie eggs pipped 5 0r 6 hours ago, since then,nothing... We'll see. Anyhow, I have the bug.

I have gotten a lot of eggs from gryeyes. I also put an ad on craigslist one time, requesting fertile hatching eggs. Ended up with 18 EE project eggs (a REALLY cool, pale blue, and the offspring should lay the same) and 17 FBCM eggs for real cheap. I contacted a lady out in Davis who breeds bantam rumpless pure ameraucanas to see if she had eggs; and though she did not have any of those, she did have others & I scored a dozen porcelain d'uccles from her and 8 SQ silkies for $1 an egg.

I call, beg, plead. I remember conversations where people tell me what kind of birds/eggs they have. I see people with chickens in their yard, and if they have roosters, I'll knock on the door and ask them if they'll sell me eggs.

The only eggs that were pricey were the barnies & they're well worth it due to their breeding, care, and bloodlines.

Anna, the first one I'm unsure about, but the second one looks like a little pullet to me.

Give it a few more weeks then post some more pictures. They look really cute!

They are absolutely adorable.....I will post more pictures after they feather out a bit more. I am only worried as I can hardly get those gorgeous eggs from two roo's!

Luke, watching them hatch is amazing. Did you ever end up getting any Penedesenca eggs from Jerry Pool?

Dawn, it does look like she's been hen pecked, it's good that they didn't draw blood, especially so close to her comb. Do you have any Blue Kote? A dab of it right on top of her wound should prevent further picking and help prevent infection. Careful though, a little bit of the Blue Kote goes a looong way.

Jerrilynn, hm... I may just be scouring CL for some hatching eggs. I've thought about buying some EBAY eggs, but there's the risk of someone shipping you poor quality stock and you have to throw shipping on top of the purchase. That can get pricey real quick.

Steff, I'm hatching (or trying to) my own eggs right now! It's so exciting!

I'm really hoping my Orpingtons start laying soon, my rooster has been mating them and their combs are very red. I keep checking their coop for pullet eggs but nothing yet...

Jeremy, I have not gotten Pene from Poole. I talked to a lady at the stockton show who ordered several times from Jerry and struggled with fertility. She has two Pene pairs and a bunch of other Mediterranean breed eggs (minorca, Andalus, buttercup, Pene, Empora, catalana) I will set for my next hatch. She is in Cali, but down near fresno.
I am just finishing up my first hatch. I got eggs from MediaZeal in Sacto, And so far I have 17 of 24 in the brooder. 2 are late hatchers, and I am struggling with patience not to help. The 5 eggs that are not hatching were questionable fertility wise. I got 2 Barnevelder, 2 OE, 7 Wellies, and 6 B/B/S ameracauna. Waiting one one more Wellie and the only Lavender Orp to break through. No More Big Hatchery chicks... Yay !!!! Also, congrats on the new chicks, I know it will be 6 mos., but I wouldlove some real heritage RIR eggs. Enjoy

My EE pullet are growing up! Already 9 weeks old

Aspen is the one in the lead. Behind her is Quinn.

They're still peeping. Or rather chirping- it doesn't sound a lot like a fuzzball "peep". But they're really social. Even if I'm standing up, Aspen will jump as high as she can (which is normally to my hip) and literally RUNS up to my shoulder from there, flapping her wings. It's the cutest thing ever!
