Well, I divide my time between Newark, CA and the Sagebrush Ocean in Nevada. We used to live in Palo Alto but we decided to go cheap and invest our money instead of being house proud - and Newark is also thirty minutes closer to both Nevada and my little 23' sailboat.
If you're looking for cheap properties with large lots, try Newark. Private school is the best route here; but you'll more than make up the tuition with the smaller house payment. You can buy a four bedroom on a 7K or more sq ft lot for under $500K here if you take your time and look around. We bought ours as a fixer upper in midtown for less than $280K.
Old Town is much overlooked by Anglos although it is quieter and has less crime in the residential portions than almost any other area. The Lake is alleged to be the "high end" district - but it's really tract houses around an artificial lake and seems to be the place where most muggings happen. We live in midtown which is diverse but generally quiet.
