Bay Area BYCers!

I just got home from work, and now there are 8 chicks!!

The side-pipper has zipped half-way round, and is still breathing and trying to work at it, but I'm worried that it might be drying out. The humidity is still good in there. There is one more pip than this morning.

Andrea, yes, one of the eggs from Bubba's girls did hatch. Yes, it was a black chick. I put four of those eggs under my broodies. Unfortunately, nothing has come of them. There is only one left out there, and it should have pipped by now. If it hasn't pipped by tomorrow, I will take it out and graft some chicks under those poor, tired mamas.

The chicks that hatched in the bator are remarkably similar. Mostly, they are dark on top, with white bellies, chests and chins. Two of them show signs of being lighter. Once those two dry, they might show signs of chipmunk striping. It's really hard to tell until they are dry, though. Many of them have white wing tips.

Sunny, I will let Tim know about the new girls! Thanks!

Yup, I sleep next to the bator, but I don't lift the lid with my toe!

I hope you guys aren't kidding about sleeping with the bators.

Bill bought me an LG last April and set it up on our dresser. We figured it would be safest there since kids wouldn't be coming over and going in my room. It's long with a mirror on it. I've left it there as my hatcher. My room is small and has a Queen sized bed and the dresser and still tight in there, so I have them about 4 feet from my head.

Kim, What about Brentwood? And what day are you needing them transported? I work all day tomorrow but have some time on Friday. It is only about 15 miles to Clayton from where I live and I work in Brentwood.

LOL!!! I don't have to do that anymore either! That experience taught me the value of a thermostat.

Congrats on the babies! I had 25 chicks hatch and sold most of them already. They were barely dry and I had to say goodbye!

I can't leave here till after 2:15. Is there a way we can do it at that time???

Sunny, most of these chicks are spoken for, too. I'm giving some to a colleague and friend who has been toying with becoming a chicken person for a year or two. I'm going to graft two of them under the broodies, since it looks like nothing is hatching out there. I will put the Bubba baby, and one other chick. It will probably be my little miracle baby, if it makes it out of the shell.

The miracle baby is an egg I labeled Jess8. I gave it to the broodies because it was such a cool shade of dove gray. They rejected it twice. Both times it was completely cold and I warmed it in the bator. The first time I put it back, they sat on it for a couple of days, then kicked it out again. I really thought it must be a quitter. I put it back in the bator, expecting absolutely nothing. But, when I got home from work today, it pipped!! Go Jess8!!

I work at 6 PM on Friday. Would that be too late? I could pick up the trio at around 5 and then bring them straight to Brentwood. I have a large dog carrier to use and a van.
