Bay Area BYCers!

Hi Kim!

A friend of mine in Oakland recommended Meyer Hatchery (www.meyerhatchery.com). I've never used them before, but she was very happy with her chickens from there. I ordered four female chicks from different breeds based on what was available to ship out at the same time...and also trying to get ones that were supposed to be less flighty/tempermental since I'm a beginner. Hope I picked well.......

Black Australorp
Barred (Plymouth) Rock
Columbian Wyandotte
Speckled Sussex

I'm getting a coop from www.laughingchickens.com , which is also local to the Bay Area. Here's a picture of one that's similar to the one I'll have:

What a wonderful coop Julie. Definetely something I would enjoy building for fun. Good luck with you chicks. There are several breeders in our area that I am sure would hatch & sell chicks to you if you post what you want & ask what is available. In time you will find several of us around. I can think of 4 just in Modesto off the top of my head. There is also a group that meets every few months based out of the Delta area & we ride together for meetings.
Enjoy.it looks like you have a good star on that.

That is a very cute coop! I warn you though... you'll soon find chickens can become very addictive... before you know it you'll be looking to build a second coop to hold 4 or 6 or... 12 more chickens that you just had to have!

LOL.

I speak from experience...

Good luck with your new babies, it sounds like you'll have a colorful, fun bunch to start!

Hi all. I hope someone can help. I bought a coop on-line about 2 months ago. Long story short, I never received it. Now I am desperate. I have (11) six week old chicks in my bathroom. I have a temporary run for them during the day, but I need to build a coop. I am not handy, so does anyone know of a carpenter who builds chicken coops? I live in Santa Rosa. I have the money back from the on-line purchase and even some of the supplies. Feeling a little foolish, but have been following this thread for several months and know that if anyone can help with good info it is the wonderfully helpful followers of Backyard Chickens.

Hi!

Just wanted to introduce myself.

I live in San Francisco and we're picking up 3-4 1 week old chicks tomorrow. This is our first time with chickens and I'm super excited!

I live in Santa Rosa as well and Western Farms is great and have pre-built coops for sale. If not you can also try Rivetown feed in Petaluma. Hope your able to get a coop soon.

We're going to Rivertown for chicks tomorrow. Has anyone else bought chicks there and had a good experience?

Hi. I'm also in Santa Rosa! In addition to Western Farm Center, look on Craigslist under the farm/garden section. I saw several local ads for coops and coop builders just last night. Might be a little cheaper than the feed store? Maybe a bit larger, too, since you have 11. What kind do you have?

Let us know how it goes.

Welcome to the chicken world!! What type of chicks are you getting? I haven't tried Rivertown, and would like your opinion. My folks started using Western Farm Center over 40 years ago, so I've never tried anywhere else. Talk about stuck in a rut!!

I think delaware, silver laced wyandottes, and possibly a frizzle cochin bantam, it just depends on what they have in stock tomorrow! I called this morning and they had week old chicks of all three breeds.
