Bay Area BYCers!

Yesterday, a large red tail? hawk flew into the garden and took the head off one of my two month old BCM chicks.
We are going to net the area again (had a net over the koi pond for years), increasing the netting area.

I just read on another thread that someone used pennant stringers as a deterrent for hawks. Will that also work?
I used fishing line when a hawk was having a smorgie board @ my house. I have not lost another chicken. I have an acre, so I ran it in corners and a few strands from tree to tree. I placed the food under the line. Pretty cheap fix. Line lasted for 4ish months, then started to come loose in areas, so is mostly removed now.
I have 2 pair of hawks that nest here. One pair is big, and the other is small.
I did not have a hawk problem when I had goats, but as soon as I got rid of the goats...
I have a 6 ft round water trough as a pond for 5 years or so. this summer I was amazed when I saw a big crane perched on my neighbors house. When I mentioned it how cool it was to the neighbor, he shared that he had no more fish in his water troughs. Wow, that thought had not crossed my mind.

For some of us who shop at Western Farm in Santa Rosa ...

JP, the chicken expert, is back!! He decided to "un-retire," (he retired December 31, 2012) and is now working part time, Tues thru Saturdays, from 9 to 2. I asked him if Western Farm would ever have chicken classes, and he said he has mentioned the idea to Debbie, Larry's daughter. Check their website for any announcements on classes.

The chick availability list is posted outside the Chick Room. JP put the order in last fall. Chicks start arriving at Western Farm in March.

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for some silkies and anything frizzled ( :) ). Does anyone know of a store that sells them? I got really lucky at TSC last year and found 6 silkies, but it took a month of going in almost everyday... Our other store gets them like once a year and they are gone within a day... Or if anyone has some babies or eggs thy would be interested in selling that would be good too!

Our first silkie chicks hatched a week ago. We are in San Jose but I go to novato regularly. Pm if you want info. My frilkie and sizzle girls won't be laying Tull late summer however.

How is everyone doing? I'm loving the warmer weather!

Hello all!

Gosh, it's been a while. Seems I only come on when I have issues and questions. Well, looks like we will be losing one of our two hens to egg yolk peritonitis. I don't know how soon, but I'm already panicking about putting her down ourselves. She's only 1.5 years old but hasn't laid since October when she first molted. Anyway, long story short, our one remaining hen can't be alone!

Is anyone looking to sell 2-3 hens, any breed, in the 6 month - 1.5 year age range? I suppose the caveat is I'm trying to avoid hatchery hens, as there is speculation that e.y.p. is caused by faulty genetics. If you or someone you know is anywhere near Livermore (though we'd be willing to travel to other parts of the bay too) and willing to sell a couple of quality hens to keep Henrietta from being totally alone, let me know. Thanks to you all!

Oh no, is frilkie something new? I can't keep sizzle and frizzle straight and now there's frilkies! Can you post a pic? Love to see them.

Sorry about your hen. I hoard my hens and wouldn't even know who I would let go of if I had to.

To bad you don't want younger. I have a pair of Blue Copper Marans, clean legged that I'm letting go of, so if anyone is interested pm me. They're about 3 1/2 or 4 months old now. I have a few roosters too if anyone is looking. Different breeds and my list is on the California thread. Mostly bantams, but they are very nice birds.
