Bay Area BYCers!

Oh no, is frilkie something new? I can't keep sizzle and frizzle straight and now there's frilkies!  Can you post a pic? Love to see them.

Its a sizzle with silked feathers rather then smooth feathers. You can't really see it in a photo. She looks like she's got bed hair. The other sizzle is standard with smooth feathers. She should have one silked gene so she can throw smooth sizzle, sizzle, or frilkies in either silkie or showgirl.

Mind you, I'm just assuming they are girls! Could be 2 roos and I could have mad crazy chicks everywhere!

I'll go down there later and see if I can get a Pic that shows her frills.

let me see if you can see anythign in these pictures. She had gotten crap from the fodder all over her crest and face so I tried to was her after, and now shes very spiky.

See her neck? That is the look.

s almost like a silkie, but with feathers that stick up more like a frizzle then???
That is EXACTLY what it is. To get a frilkie you need
2 silkie genes ( 1 from each parent)
1 frizzle gene ( 2 frizzle genes are frazzle, and those feathers are seriously tweaked.)

Its not as obvious as a sizzle becuse they are a ball of fluff anyway.

Okay, so then if I crossed my silkie hen with my sizzle rooster would I potentially get it? My roo is white silkie x black frizzled Cochin so there would be 2 silkie genes and a frizzle gene, right?

Frazzle?!!

A whole new world! I'm still trying to figure out colors!

What's the difference between frizzle and sizzle?

You can try it and find out. I THINK you should get all 3 types of chicks. You bigger issue will be earlobes, toes and comb if you have cochin in there. Often the walnut comb can be hard to keep when you cross. Some would get the frizzle gene, some would not. You cant get 100% frizzle, that's frazzle. for some reason frazzle can be bad. I had some frazzle chicks that were from shipped eggs and they seemed OK, but were freaky looking. But its a minor no no. Like breeding showgirl to showgirl, you can overemphasis a gene with bad consequences.

Mind you, I have done showgirl to showgirl and if the birds live past the fragile stage they are fine. But they do have big patches of bare on the butt and chest that I makes me worried about them getting cold. You cant see when they grow out, but it is still there. Makes them easy to clean if you are eating your extra roosters however...

I think a frizzle is a cochin and a sizzle is a silkie. Both the terms refer to a bird that has a single frizzle gene that makes the feathers turn up, but not curl inward and tweak. But I could be wrong. So many similar terms confuses me too!

Hello all!

Gosh, it's been a while.  Seems I only come on when I have issues and questions.  Well, looks like we will be losing one of our two hens to egg yolk peritonitis.  I don't know how soon, but I'm already panicking about putting her down ourselves.  She's only 1.5 years old but hasn't laid since October when she first molted.  Anyway, long story short, our one remaining hen can't be alone!

Is anyone looking to sell 2-3 hens, any breed, in the 6 month - 1.5 year age range?  I suppose the caveat is I'm trying to avoid hatchery hens, as there is speculation that e.y.p. is caused by faulty genetics.  If you or someone you know is anywhere near Livermore (though we'd be willing to travel to other parts of the bay too) and willing to sell a couple of quality hens to keep Henrietta from being totally alone, let me know.  Thanks to you all!

Sorry to hear about your hen. Just wanted to say hello because we are from Livermore, too. And, we just got two chicks, which we named Chickita and Henerietta. Good luck!
