Bay Area BYCers!

My silkie roo, Max, HATES squirrels and will chase them up trees, then hang around the tree to keep 'em from descending. If they jump to amother tree, Max moves to that tree to guard it. The squirrels get so mad and ***** at him the whole time.

Oh, and I have some news: At least one of the five flock eggs I put under Sparkle, my recently acquired house silkie, started peeping when I checked for pips. Tomorrow is Day 21. (No external pips yet.)

I am so excited!

It's not like it's my first broody or anything, but it IS the only one I've had right in the house... Plus, Sparkle is special.

Okay, everybody in the flock is special. Miss Sparkle is just specialer. :D

That's exciting news! I'm excited about everything chicken today! My incubator came today and I have 10 eggs from chiqita to set!!!

They are mixes from her flock and I don't remember what is what. There are 2 small whitish eggs, some blue eggs, some brown eggs. Do you remember what you gave me, Shantih???

Thanks for all the information! I do have a question....what is the tidy cat feeder? I don't have a lot of waste with the galvanized one I have but sometimes the food doesn't fill the bottom tray like it should and I have to shake it....not a big deal, but the girls scold me when I shake it. I don't think they like all th noise.

Also, anyone have any of their girls chase squirrels? One of my silkies - Sophie - gets pretty agitated at a neighborhood squirrel that pops into my yard on her way accross the fence from time to time. Anyway, sometimes Sophie puts up quite the fuss and chases her out of the yard, but sometimes she leaves her alone....moody little bird!! I wouldn't know how to keep the squirrel out of the yard, but don't want anything to happen to the Sophie bird either....

I'm sorry! I missed the question.
I use tidy cat litter and it comes in plastic boxes with a lid. The lid is hinged. I put feed in it, hinged side down and the lid is like a ramp. My chickens throw feed out of a galvanized feeder everywhere but they like to perch and eat with the tidy cat feeders and don't waste anything.

If only they were not bright yellow with logos on them!

Sparkles is the best chicken name! I have a splash silkie named sparkles who is a broodies extraordinaire. She is a moody little thing too but so far does not hate squirrel s!

2 FCBM, 2 Med brown, 1 light brown, 3 blue, 2 mini-white So, 2 Marans, 3 light OE ?, 3 ee/legbar, and 2 Icelandic surprise! I'm so excited! I think an assortment of colored egg chicks would be a good idea and a fun thing to sell!

The incubator is running and I have an older thermometer/hygrometer in it. The temps are comparable: 99.6 for the incubator and 99 for the thermometer. But the humidity is very different: 46% for the incubator and 61% for the hygrometer. I think I'm going to have to run to the far away pet store and see if I can pick up another one.

If there is an osh around pick up an ACU rite. It does .1 up to 100 and untill chicks poop on the intake the hydrometer is good. It is just not good to the you you have hit 101.

I picked up a reptile thermometer and hygrometer at Petco. So, I have 2 separate thermometers and 2 hygrometers in the incubator. The temps all agree within 1 degree but the humidity readings are very different. The incubator says 46% but both hygrometers say 61%. What would you do? Should I just go ahead and set the eggs and not worry about the humidity difference? I am checking the calibration of both hygrometers using the salt water slush in a plastic bag method.

Ya, jsut calibrate adn fix in a few days, humidity isnt a huge issue as long as you fix it soonish.

Thanks, Shantih! My quail eggs came today but incubation for Bob Whites is 23 days. I'm thinking about going ahead and setting them tomorrow then putting my chicken eggs in a plastic produce container at lockdown. Timing should work to leave them in the incubator for 24 hours then it will be time for lockdown for the quail. I guess humidity will be a problem but my only other option is to wait until the chickens hatch in 20 days and then start the quail. Would the eggs still be good in 3 weeks?
