nice light hens, but white lobes and squirrel tail would be DQs for showing...but I'm sure you just want some of those beautiful eggs she shows! NICE

White ear lobes and what looks like squirrel tail is a major sign of Penedesenca blood within the line.

If the pictures show the combs clearly, look for springs in the back of the comb, if their "Marans" have the sprigs then they've been crossed with Penes.

ETA: Those faults wouldn't necessarily be a disqualification at a show, especially since Marans haven't been acepted into the APA yet... there's no written standard on whichc to judge them by, so they would just be points deducted from the birds overall score.

Just repeating what the top breeders in this breed have told me

& I'm just giving my opinion on the matter as well.

This is a quote from Walt Leonard, from the Wheaten Marans thread, concerning white ear lobes in breeds that are suppose to have red ears.

White in the earlobes is the only white DQ I can find for a Welsummer in the SOP. It is listed under the Welsummer description, but it is also in the General DQ's for a red lobed bird.

Apparently I was wrong about white lobes only being a fault, they are a DQ.

You learn something new everyday, huh?
