Thank you very much Cheryl.

I wasn't happy with the quality of my Delaware rooster. His color was wrong, he had entirely too much black feathering in his tail feathers and I feel like the line he came from might have been inbred a bit too much, resulting some deformities. Mostly things like curled toes, beak issues... but there was also known dwarfism in his lineage... that's something that I did not want to risk introducing into my flock. I did hatch one dwarf chick, a brother of my rooster, it was so sad.

So, I culled him. He went to live with a family in the San Jose area that was just looking for a flock leader. Stewart was a nice boy, just not right for breeding, IMO. For now I've decided to hold off on Delawares, until I can either source better stock to start my program or start again with the remaining stock that I have, acquiring another rooster from the same line.

It was a very, very hard decision for me to make, giving up breeding the Dels.

I still have all of my hens, so I still could restart in the future

Once these girls figure out what those nest boxes are for I'll let you know.

Maybe since my hatches have been so terrible, if they don't get better, I'll just load you up with eggs to hatch and you can pick me out maybe 3 pullets?

So jeremy I'm sure you know Kathyinmo, I understand hers are fabulous, the oldtimers on the heritage thread all recommend her line! She also is starting a new line for scratch with barred rocks over new hampshires - just in case you'd like to start up again. I love delawares, they are fabulous personalities

Cheryl, Kathy and I actually had some of the same stock. I have since rehomed all of those birds for the reasons stated above. Our birds originated from Janet Holtman by way of Cynthia Bacon. Kathy also has/had another line in her flock, but our birds shared lineage none the less.

My Delawares are all from Bill Braden now.

Jeremy, when can we have a field trip to your place?

I'm thinking sometime in the summer when our place is a bit less "rough around the edges"... LOL.

Cool! I'm showing 2 silver penciled plymouth rock pullets and a black orpington!

Of course! Those are some real beauties. I'm looking forward to seeing them live. Good luck in the show.

We might want to wait until they've been laying for a couple of weeks then. If I hatch out at least 6 pullets I wouldn't mind you taking 3 of them.

It would really stink though if I only hatched out 3-4 pullets.

Thank you so much, I can't wait to actually "meet" people instead of just on byc! I really am so naive about this whole thing. I got very lucky that walt leonard called me directly to tell me how to prep the girls, but how the whole thing works, I'm still at a loss. I don't think I'm supposed to hang by my cages.... IDK so at any rate we'll have to get a list of cell phones (obviously not published on the internet) so that we can all connect.
