Hi Steph,

Did you zig zag by Western Farm also?

I had three eggs disappear from my broody cochin ... coop is very secure at night, no cats, etc. during the day ... I haven't figured that out yet, unless she ate them, which is possible. No shell, nothing ... she is now sitting on 9 eggs, the last time I looked ...

Vacation this week for you?

no, we didn't get over to Western Farm. we spent the (rainy) day out at the coast watching the crazy surf and having a nice clam chowder and fish n chips lunch in Bodega Bay.

I don't think they ate the missing egg. When that happens, there is usually a yolk trail on the shavings. There was no evidence.

I dunno, Steff. Olga ate one of the eggs she was sitting on about 5 days into it, and I never found even a trace of yolk or shell or anything! Our coop is also uber-secure, and the nesting boxes are up where a predator couldn't get to them even if they wanted to... not without there being a big ruckus in the henhouse that would wake the neighborhood!

It is entirely possible the missing egg was consumed by a hungry broody hen.

My broody hen had NO evidence of egg on her / under her ... NOTHING on the hay the eggs were on .. great mystery ...

mmaddie's mom :

Don't want to butt in on this ongoing thread, but it was suggested that I post here...

We will be traveling to San Francisco in mid May and I would like to bring back some fertile eggs for hatching some living souvenirs.

I am looking for Bantam birds... Ameraucanas and Welsummers if possible... but am open to any interesting suggestions.

Anyone going to have available eggs at that time? Pictures of your birds would be great but not an absolute prerequisite... description would do.

This will also be an experiment in traveling on airplanes with fertile eggs.

We are very much looking forward to this trip... it will be my first time to Ca.

Thanks

ps: We can discuss details on PM.

Im sure someone here will have eggs for you, I have to say I really like your idea of living souvenirs!

While that is possible, I had food in a dish next to her. And, there have been tunnels under the pen lately. My guess is a rat. I close the pen, but leave the pop door open most of the time. Tonight, I closed it. We'll see.

Speaking of living souvenirs...I am heading to Spain and France pretty soon. Anyone ever tried to bring back fertile eggs??

Here's the teeny Lav... both Lavs have almost black legs and feet!

Jeremy,

No new hatches today ... GT let mama and the two chicks out for a few minutes today. He's also taken the tarps off the coop, and is reinforcing everything - he's going to rebuild the coop so nothing will get in ever again.

Do you have any orpington chicks? or other chicks for sale? Was thinkng the kids would like to have a few to help raise and also for eggs later. They were told the cochin flew away for now.

Thanks

Spain AND France? Can I stowaway? My partner has family in Seville, you can just drop me off there and lemme know when you're ready to come back.

I don't think you could legally bring eggs back without quarantining them and having them tested for different avian diseases. Which can be very costly and not to mention time consuming. We've looked into importing, hatching eggs or live birds. The hoops to jump through are almost endless, it almost makes importing eggs not worth it. IF you could carry some home though I'm going to send you with a list!!!

Daphne, I probably won't have any Orpington hatching eggs or chicks until this summer, after losing Edmund I received a replacement cockerel but he's about 2 months younger than my girls, not even really thinking about breeding yet, so it will be awhile before I have fertile eggs...

I do have Blue Wheaten chicks hatching next week and then more I think about a week later.

So still just the two babies hatched that we all saw on Saturday?
