Cheryl,

Is there any possibility of getting a variance from the city to allow you to keep some of the heritage breeding birds? I do agree that you are providing a service to the community to offer these birds at reasonable prices. And, there is such a focus on the local, sustainable movement.....is there any hope?

Hi All,

I got back from the 200 mile + round trip to Cheryl's temporary housing. The place is so adorable I didn't want to leave. Not a bad spot to hang out at but we all know "there's no place like home."

Anyway, I took my Brinsea and put in a heating pad that works off the cigarette lighter to keep the eggs warm. I actually think the coronations on the top might have gotten a little too warm on the trip home. Hoping not! Cheryl had made arrangements for some of her other stock by the time I left too. I hope she gets to keep some. What a shame if she doesn't.

Oh, and I tried to walk out with the cutest little egg holder she had on her counter and she actually had an extra. Kindly she offered to give it to me

but I paid her for it. There were several other things I would have taken too but she kept a close eye on me. She let me be the new MF leghorn Mama without even a credit check! Wait till that check for the egg holder bounces.

Thanks Cheryl. I won't let you down.

TWO dead wheaties today... a healthy one dead at lunch, and the runt after work. I think both were boys & the rest girls, but still

I HOPE it's not the corn cob bedding I just gave them yesterday. Nothing else has changed (except a bigger bin as brooder... thoroughly cleaned with Oxine). They were on it before, then shavings for 10 days, then back on it, and they've been pecking it but we can't tell if they're eating it. The crops felt nearly empty on the little bodies, and are full on the live ones (taking little "test flights" in their bigger brooder).
Any thoughts??

AMAZINGLY GREAT FANTASTIC NEWS!!!

That old saying about knowing the right people really rang true...My friend that headed the CLUCK group, worked with the city on my plight. They came to an agreement that I am able to keep my hens but must get rid of the roosters - therefore I won't be able to breed. That makes me sad, especially losing Sir Giles, but I GET TO KEEP MY GIRLS!!! I am thinning out my pens however.

This "agreement" with the city is good unless they get another complaint after the roosters are gone. (If it's the neighbor I think it is that complained, there is no working with them) So I think thinning my flock is a necessity. I'll continue to hatch and sell chicks but unfortunately at this point they won't be my own.

The out pouring of support from this group and others has been amazing. The fact that you guys would give up your time/space etc to help me gives me hope for this world. IF we ever get back into our house (who knows at this point, as they found e coli and mold in the soil & floorboards, no communication from the sanitation district in a week+, and the whole bottom floor is gutted, but and IF we ever get back into our house...I'm throwing a party to celebrate my good fortune of having such a great group of friends...
