Bay Area BYCers!

I have all bators shut down, and my last broody is looking like she's broken her cycle. So keeping fingers, toes and legs crossed I don't get another because I'm fighting the urge to hatch again.

woohooooooo is that the first sppr you've hatched? she's adorable

Nope not the first and don't know if you remembered, but I had some hatch and they got put in with some mixed chicks. I sold them. Talk about depressed. I think it was just 2, but still!

I also hatched out Rockette. I need to get a pic of her. She used to be a cuddler, but she seems top think she's a primadona these days. Lately she hangs with her buddy, Fat Chick and they head under things when I have my phone out. When I'm cleaning and feeding it's another story, although I've tried then too, but usually I am trying to get things done so I know they're all comfortable. I couldn't get to Fat Chick tonight, but Rockette is out in the big growout pen tonight. I'm actually nervous. They sleep together and free range together. Tonight both are on their own.

Crud I may have to go get her.

She's very pretty, but I really need to work on size next time around. Just hope my new baby is another pullet, but it sure does stand erect for a pullet.

I have for sale a Lavender Ameraucana cockerel. He is 5mos old. He is from Jean Ribbeck's stock in which I got eggs from her earlier this year, who is a Ameraucana breeder. I need to rehome this guy ASAP as I am currently over my limit on males. I have 7 currentlyand need this guy gone ASAP. I am asking $20/obo to re-home him. I am located in the south bay. If you live else where that is not to far I'd be willing to meet someone someplace. Or you could come down to my place to pick him up. Please email me at [email protected]. I don't check my PM's here to much but check my email a few times per day. I would like him gone by this weekend as I have another Ameraucana cockerel coming in to replace this guy. Email me if interested and I can send photos as well.

Thanks
Kim

Just visited Cheryl today and bartered some grassfed beef for a couple of her beautiful *culls*! (If that's a cull, I'll be glad to take your culls anytime Cheryl... Well, if I had more space I would.)

I posted pics on a new thread.

Hello Bay area BYC'ers! New to the site just thought I'd say hello to local chicken people. Just started my chicken coop a week ago. 3 Plymouth Rocks hatched on Aug 31. I'm looking for a couple Easter Eggers to add to my 3 rocks.

I have Olive Eggers if you want to come to Modesto. Then again, I'll probably be going to Dixon next month.

It was a sad day in our backyard today.

I have been having problems with some of my 1 1/2 yr old hens picking on my large Buff Brahma who has just started laying eggs. They will gang up on her, jump on her back, and peck her mercilessly. Sass just squats and takes the abuse while honking like a goose. (Any ideas on why they would pick on her like this? Is it just a pecking order thing?) She is our largest chicken and a sweetie. She runs to me for protection but of course I can't be there all the time. This behavior started when she started laying eggs two weeks ago.

The worst offender is our Silver Laced Wyandotte, Beauty. She will see Sass across the yard and run full speed to her just to peck her. I have been thinking about putting her in solitary confinement for a while to see if I can break this behavior. Then this afternoon, I got a call at work from my daughter. While she was in the backyard resuing Sass from our tiny Golden Sex Link hen she heard some loud flapping and found Beauty thrashing on the ground. She ran to get her big brother and when they got back to Beauty, she was dead. She was under a large metal ladder that my DH likes to keep up in the yard for some reason. I am guessing that she was up on the ladder, maybe slipped, and broke her neck when she fell to the ground. Poor girl. There just wasn't anything my kids could do to help her. She is the first adult chicken that we have lost and I feel especially bad because I was so mad at her for her recent behavior.

Then to top it off, this evening while it was still light we found two half grown racoons hanging out in one of our cedar trees. The chickens gave the alarm call and ran for the bushes. We tried squirting the coons with water from the hose but the tree is really tall and they just moved up a few branches. So, I sat outside until the birds went up in the coop for the night. I sure hope that the coons move on and don't decide to live in my backyard!

It was just too much drama for me today. I hope that tomorrow is a better day!

RIP, Beauty.

Oh Debi, I'm sorry. I scared one of my FBCM hens one noght with a flashlight. Same thing, she fell, I saw her flutter, but thought she got back up. When I went over to lift her up to help her she was dead. I felt so horrible. She was my #8 egg layer and the sweetest of my Marans.

I have an idea for the coons. Halloween decorations are at Walmart, or better yet, make one at home...........Scarecrow! Put something intimidating in his hands and maybe they'll be fooled. Can't hurt and you're also ready for Fall decor.
