Thanks, Jeremy! I'll try to get some new pics of my Olive Eggers, too! They are big, beautiful girls also! I only have 4 out of 15 chickens laying eggs right now and they are my 2 OEs, Bijou my Blue Langshan, and my Buff Brahma. I am thrilled with my OE's eggs. Both are huge eggs and one is dark Marans brown and the other is a dark olive green. I will post some pics of the olive egg tomorrow, too.

Hi Jeremy,

There is a lot of science with lights for chickens. I found a bulletin that talked about different colors and their effect on chickens. There is a color of light that makes them grow faster. It's used with broilers to get them ready faster. There is probably a light color for the Roosters to improve fertility. The light for hens and laying is the incandescent type of yellow. It's not supposed to work with florescent or LED, but who knows? I am using a 40 watt halogen that uses 29 watts. It is on a timer and comes on at 3:30 in the morning and goes off at 8:00(the off time does not really matter for me, since I let them out at 7:00 right now).

Out of 11 hens, I got 10 eggs yesterday. The chickens are very healthy.

When will you be able to keep the Rooster? Did the City vote yet?

Wow I am so glad I found this thread. We are in Vacaville. We are looking for BLRW to purchase if anyone has any. Also silver campines. Anyone interested in doing an egg swap or chicken trade day or something? We were thinking of putting one together at our house with a Potluck / BBQ.

Euskal Oiloa - Basque Hen HATCHING!!!

Well I'm in Lanai enjoying the sun while Chooklet is hatching my Basques!! She's a great surrogate mom. Today is hatch day and they actually started hatching yesterday! I'm hoping to breed these. Their fame is that they are supposed to be among the most friend chickens alive - so we'll see if it's true.

We have 22 hatched! 6 more pipped and 6 doing nothing yet, but again today is the official hatch day!! woohoo they even survived a trip in the car to her house after a day of lockdown!

Oh the dark ones are silver penciled rocks, Additionally she's hatching more silver pencils and the first 3 mille fleur leghorns from my flock!!

The big fluffy thing is an extremely rare jumbo lion-headed cochit, my own cross between a buff cochin and a lion-headed rabbit.

This thread moves slower this time of year, not a lot going on in the chicken world during the winter months but in the spring and summer times we typically have good sized regional meet ups. Folks from all over the Bay Area, some a bit farther out even, get together and enjoy good food and chat chicken for hours.

I've got 14 Swedish Flower Hen hatching eggs cookin' away in the bator to hatch sometime around New Year's Day, I'm super excited! We're thinking about adding this breed to one we might possibly raise if all goes as planned in getting the noise ordinance changed here. I think they're absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
