Bay Area BYCers!

Ooh, right around the corner. Would you like to meet up sometime? I'm new to this and have tons of questions....

The more the merrier! I love to chat chicken and I'd be more than happy to answer your questions by sharing the knowledge that I have.

I might even be able to help you get your start with birds when you're ready, I'll be hatching chicks throughout most of the springtime and later this year I'll probably have started pullets and hens available.

My oldest juveniles are now just over 5 months old, they were in the backyard today so I took a few pictures.

This is Maggie, teasing the other chickens in their run.

Kate again, this time going after my citrus trees.

John, Tressa, Jeremy and anyone else, I'd love to meet up for a coffee and talk chicken. Peets works for me. (Jeremy, which Peets are you at?)

Shall I start by suggesting 11 am Sunday 12th (Jeremy, I think you said you had Sunday's off?) at Peets in Montclair (Oakland)? Any takers?

I'm at the store in Downtown Oakland, it's a madhouse during the week. We're actually closed on Sundays, thankfully. I don't have anything planned for the 12th right now, so that could work for me.

The Montclair store is VERY busy on Sundays, it's a neighborhood store so it will be full and there will probably be very little seating, it might be better to find somewhere a bit more intimate and quiet?

boogiedog, how many Swedish Flower Hen chicks did you end up with? Have you run into any issues with crooked toes?

Hey Jeremy, in my two hatches I had no crooked toes. I do have, unfortunately, an abundance of roos. Nature may indicate 50/50 but Murphy gives me 80/20. Dang. I have some gorgeous light tan Swedes out of this last batch who I think are going to color out nicely. But alas, I think they are roos. The hens coincidently are all dark.

RE: Peet's in Montclair, it is a bit busy as the Farmer's Market goes on on Sunday until 2pm. But the garage always has parking, which is nice. We could land in Crogans, they have a big bar area that is fun and could easily seat a gaggle of us. Around the corner from Peets. Their coffee stinks, but heck, I'm going for the chicken talk :)

I just hatched out some lemon orps, black orps and dark brahmas yesterday; percolating away in the other two bators are Marraduna Basques (from Jim) and Giant Blue cochins (ok, so I just happen to love them :))

Allison, I ended up only hatching 6 Swedes, out of 14 eggs.

Out of those 6 chicks 2 have crooked toes. 1 is a pullet that looks like it is going to be a beautiful Blue Mottled color, I'm super bummed about her. The other is a Mille Fleur cockerel, he only has 1 crooked toe but it's there. The other 4 chicks all have normal toes, I've got 2 pullets that look like they are going to be solid Splash or maybe Splash Mottled, another Blue Mottled looking crested cockerel, he has some red coming in on his head and shoulders now and a crested pullet who is reddish and blue, I have no idea how she will turn out though. But she has a HUGE crest already.

What do you plan on doing with all of your cockerels? Who did you hatch eggs from?

I've never been to Crogans but if they have seating and the atmosphere is mellow then it works for me.

The SFH are my youngest chicks, they just over a month old. My juvie Orps are the only other babies I have right now. In the incubators I've got eggs from my Sumatra trio, a Platinum cockerel over Black hens. I've candled 2 out of the 4 eggs and so far the two that I checked are developing! I'm so excited about these guys, I'm hoping to hatch a few more Platinum and Dun chicks.

In my other incubator the special eggs are cookin' away... they're only on day 5, I have American Buff Orpingtons from sewandgrow who I believe has birds from Terry Britt lines, they should be big beautiful golden birds. The other eggs in that incubator are project large fowl Chocolate Orpington eggs, the resulting chicks that hatch should weigh around 6 or 7 pounds and should be able to naturally breed with my LF English Orp girls. I am VERY EXCITED about these guys and I cannot wait until they hatch. I'll be working with a breeder in Washington to develop a LF Chocolate Orpington.

I also just bought some Golden Neck Old English Game bantam eggs... heh... it's a sickness I tell you.

Hey Jeremy, my first swedes hatched 12/21 (6 out of 15), second batch 7 out of 12. In my first batch I had 4 hens, sold two and 2 remain, and I have the two gorgeous splash roos. I am praying that I am wrong... Second batch I have 4 beautiful light brown peeps and the 3 darker (hatch date 1/9/12)

BTW I do vaccinate for Mareks, so if you want to coordinate I can reconstitute the vaccine on a day that works for you as well and you can rush some back to your peeps if you want. I just hate throwing so much away every time I vaccinate, even though I gang up several hatches in the brooders (pre-coop).

The bar area of Crogans on Sunday is pretty quiet, and they have large communal tables.

Yes, this is a wicked sickness (Is my Boston showing?), but I just love it. I have brabanters coming from a breeder back east - I hatched two from a New Jersey breeder and just love them. Had to get more. Also have true aracuana (rumpless) coming next week...good grief.

I'm looking for some good lav Ameracuanas - had a bad hatch of only 3, and one is black. Suggestions as to where to buy?

Seriously though, I don't know what to do with all these roos. I placed 4 last Sat (thank god) but still have one crowing away in my garage. Are your neighbors ok with that? I worry...
