Bay Area BYCers!

Hey Jeremy, my first swedes hatched 12/21 (6 out of 15), second batch 7 out of 12. In my first batch I had 4 hens, sold two and 2 remain, and I have the two gorgeous splash roos. I am praying that I am wrong... Second batch I have 4 beautiful light brown peeps and the 3 darker (hatch date 1/9/12)

BTW I do vaccinate for Mareks, so if you want to coordinate I can reconstitute the vaccine on a day that works for you as well and you can rush some back to your peeps if you want. I just hate throwing so much away every time I vaccinate, even though I gang up several hatches in the brooders (pre-coop).

The bar area of Crogans on Sunday is pretty quiet, and they have large communal tables.

Yes, this is a wicked sickness (Is my Boston showing?), but I just love it. I have brabanters coming from a breeder back east - I hatched two from a New Jersey breeder and just love them. Had to get more. Also have true aracuana (rumpless) coming next week...good grief.

I'm looking for some good lav Ameracuanas - had a bad hatch of only 3, and one is black. Suggestions as to where to buy?

Seriously though, I don't know what to do with all these roos. I placed 4 last Sat (thank god) but still have one crowing away in my garage. Are your neighbors ok with that? I worry...

I vaccinate for Mareks as well, it is terrible the amount of vaccine that you actually waste. I typically don't hatch more than 20-30 chicks during any given incubation, that's a lot of vaccine going to waste. Where do you buy your vaccine from? We get ours from Sam's in San Jose, they're out of stock a lot though. I'm going to have to make sure to call and make sure they will have some when these next babies are due. Unless we have hatch dates that are somewhat close in date and we could share, I'd be willing to pitch in for the vaccine so that we could both save some money and waste less.

Crogans sounds good to me!

CrystalCreek has BEAUTIFUL Lavender Ameraucanas, she was selling hatching eggs a few weeks ago. If she cannot help you out then I would go directly to Jean Ribbeck and buy from her.

Have you thought about growing your roos out and processing them? We ate 2 last year, a Heritage Rhode Island Red and a Blue Coronation Sussex, they were DELICIOUS!

We just have the one Sumatra rooster here at home right now, though I plan on bringing my Orpington boy back soon. What we've done since Poe has started crowing is boxing him at night. He goes into a pet carrier when it gets dark and sleeps in the garage, we let him out around 9:30-10:00 AM everyday to be with his girls and he spends the day outside. So far we haven't had a complaint and we're now getting fertile eggs to hatch. I think the complaint that we got probably had to do with the roosters crowing in the early morning hours, probably disturbing people who aren't used to the noise. Poe does crow in the morning but the sound is muffled by the walls and you cannot hear him once you walk away from the garage. There's the chance that someone still could complain if they heard him during daytime hours but it's a risk I'm willing to take. I want to keep a rooster, I feel like it's a right as a chicken owner that I should have. We plan on doing this for as long as we possibly can while working on getting the noise ordinance that prevents the keeping of roos either updated or removed altogether.

First Jubilee Orpington Egg from my girls today!

I wonder if it was because of the melon & extra greens I gave them yesterday, or maybe it was the chicken carcass!

Popped it right in the incubator with some mille fleur leghorns but just realized I won't be in town that weekend! Auntie Chooklet will have to come to the rescue!!

Worked all day at the ranch changing pop door locations, moving dust bathes etc. I have an empty pen that I will probably use to split of the silver pencil rock flock. I'll have 6 girls and 2 boys by the middle of next week! They were so popular at the Stockton show, sold every last one! Hoping to grow out some that I can show next year!

I have 2 eggs from my Silver Phoenix! They're going in the incubator tomorrow. One of the SPPRs is laying to. A lot of my Game x Marans pullets have started laying, so looks like we'll have lots of eggs in the fridge too this year. One lays a really pretty brown egg to, so that's nice and one is laying a white egg. Don't know who that is yet, but the others from that mix all lay different shades of brown. Nice to have layer this year.

Congrats on your eggs Kim!!! I have 2 more eggs from my Platinum Sumatra pen that I'm putting into the incubator tonight, I should start having staggered hatches around the end of the month. I'm crossing my fingers for lots of little Platinum and Dun babies!

So far the 12th works for me too; I'm unfamiliar with Oakland, but if somebody sends me the address for Crogan's I'll try to get there.....

RE: Peet's in Montclair, it is a bit busy as the Farmer's Market goes on on Sunday until 2pm. But the garage always has parking, which is nice. We could land in Crogans, they have a big bar area that is fun and could easily seat a gaggle of us. Around the corner from Peets. Their coffee stinks, but heck, I'm going for the chicken talk :)

I'm not sure where it's at either, but Montclair is relatively easy to get to, it's right off the 13.

I can google it and send you the address too.
