Baytril dosage for ducks with bumblefoot

It is definitely a death sentence. I can attest to that. Two of my Pekins got bumblefoot from stepping on metal that I had no idea was on the property. One was really bad and we took her to the vet, while we treated the other at home. We went to the wrong vet. The antibiotic may have worked, but the salve was not good for the duck. I researched it an found out it that particular one will prevent the wound from healing. We took her to another vet, but it had already become systemic. We put her down that day. I am not sure with her if even the correct treatment would have saved her though.

It is a death sentence what you did was right. We can't let the infection spread into joints and bloodstream.

Oh no. I am so sorry. What salve was it? The one this vet prescribed is called Mupirocin 2%. I told the vet I had silver sulfadine. He said that would be his second choice, so I have just been using the Mupirocin. But I also bought a big tube of triple antibiotic ointment, as well as the PRID drawing salve. If anybody thinks one is better over the other, I have no problem switching. We also use the Vetericyn spray.

I was using triple antibiotic but stopped everything but Epsom salt soaks and Veterycin because Her bumble was staying too moist . So I guess it's up to the individual person on what works for each bird. My other chickens and my one duck with bumble had no problems with their foot being treated with triple and wrapped.

Thank you. I guess the challenge is to find what works for each particular situation. But I am thankful to be directed by knowledgeable folks like you all! My prayer (literally) is that we do right by her, and that eventually she will heal and this will be in the past. She has a small bumble on her other foot. At least we THINK it is one. We haven’t started treating it since this other one is so consuming us right now. We are keeping an eye on it, and if it seems to be worsening, I suppose we should start treating that one too. I just don’t want her totally off her feet. I’ll post a picture later of the other foot. Maybe somebody will say it’s NOT a bumble and maybe just a callous. (I can hope, right?!)

Yep always hope. Sometimes the small just starting ones will react to a drawing salve. Many members have used it on small bumbles. PRID is one.

So, she is really limping pretty badly today, and limiting her activities, which I haven’t seen her do prior. We must have really bothered something last night when we were cleaning up her foot. I want to get your opinions once again. I hope I don’t tire you out, but this forum is my best chance for her recovery right now I think.

I have an opened bottle of the 10% Baytril. I had it for other pets several years ago. The “expiration” date is 10/20/18. It is in a brown plastic bottle, and it has been stored in our fairly climate controlled home in a dark place. I did place an order through Jedd’s last night for some new. However, I am in Michigan, and Jedd’s is in California. I don’t know if I’m over reacting because of the severe limp today, but I’m just afraid I will lose her. I called Jedd’s and asked if I could use the old stuff until I get my new stuff. They said NO. I’m wondering what you all think? I’ve heard that expired meds don’t go bad or turn into something different, they just get weaker. I don’t know. I also have outdated Metacam. I’m wondering if I could use that for her pain? Maybe a bad limp is not that big of deal. I am just at the beginning of my (hopefully) long journey with ducks.

So technically there may be nothing harmful with expired antibiotics. However, the antibiotic breaks down overtime and the concentration is going to be lower than it was originally. Because of this, it is better to have fresh antibiotic so they get the proper dosage and effectively treat the bacteria. You are less likely to have the bacteria infection go away if you use expired antibiotics. I would not recommend it.

The salve was nitrofurazone. I am pretty sure my girl died of the initial infection which never went away. But bad antibiotic choices and the salve from a vet not as familiar with birds and the bumblefoot was far worse than yours led to it going systemic. My girl was a bit of sweet curmudgeon. My husband told me when he took her into the second vet, a small dog came to check her out. She puffed and hissed at the dog and the dog was OMG I am leaving her the hell alone. Even injured, she made muscovy drake quickly move out of her way. She was a special girl.
