BBS (Blue Black Splash) Marans - Pumperkinz

They're so beautiful! Your project is fascinating. I've got 4 BBS Orpingtons coming at the end of September from Meyer. 1 male and 3 females. Then in the spring, I'm going to buy some straight run chicks from a wonderful local breeder of Orpingtons. Also BBS, but maybe some others as well.

My plan is to breed the BBS, but also to eventually cross them with other Orpingtons. I've also got a Red Cochin bantam and 2 other bantam Cochins that might be Partridge. They're all less than 5 weeks (the 2 new ones only 1 week), so I'm not sure of their genders or even color on the youngest 2, but hoping to cross those as well. I've got a male Porcelain d'Uccle and a new Mille Fleur d'Uccle. Fingers crossed she's female, then I'll cross them. The genetics of chickens is fascinating to me, and I'm looking forward to learning more.

I've only had my birds for 4 weeks this Saturday (just got the new ones on Sunday), but they've brought me immense joy already.
BBS (Blue/Black/Splash) has been fun learning. Should be very similar genetics as far as BBS goes across. But it's all a learning experience!

Now that I have my insurance mostly sorted, I can start selling the birds. I don't really want to ship baby chicks in the mail, so probably just eggs for myself. Once I get pens set up and can guarantee stuff other then the known OE's I can produce.

This is one of my joys, and my Geese are very much my second joy right now. I really really really love them!

Yeah I think I would start by selling chicks locally, then maybe shipping hatching eggs, but not live chicks.

My friend and neighbor's passion is brahmas. She's got darks, lights, Isabella, Lemon Pyles, and maybe others. She's been hatching them out and has some grow outs now. By spring, she should have 19 dark brahma pullets with which to start her breeding flock over time if all goes well. Her other passion is turkeys, and she's hatching out a ton of them this year.

Personally and from the NPIP/AI testers they tell me to leave turkey/emus alone lol. (Turkeys are very cute though, they are like the dogs of poultry).

She said testing and requirements for turkeys and the amount of times they get out and or wild ones will try and just live in your yard turns out to be too chaotic lol.

Lol there is a flock (a pretty big one) that I see all the time just a few miles up the road. I'd say 3, at most. I keep expecting those things to show up in her yard. 😆 I think her hens have laid 4 times this year, and so many eggs! I had no clue turkeys laid like that.

I do love them, but they aren't something I've got room for right now. And I've got so many plans for what I want to breed, I may never. Our planned expansions are already full, lol.

Getting geese this year, they lay once a year. And only like 15-30 eggs max lol.

It's like a special event usually.

I want ducks one day too. But I most assuredly don't want ducklings in my guest room, lol. So I'll be waiting until our outside brooding shed/pen is built.

Just keep in mind I spent 2 months with goslings in doors during full time work in the same office. While I love them, they were DIRTY. I was cleaning constantly and ducks are probably dirtier I think from what I remember.

That's what I've heard is that ducklings are super messy. I've got 2 brooders set up in my guest room right now. One has my almost ready for the coop bantams, the other has my week old bantams. They're dusty and messy enough.

I got lucky this year and got a somewhat dust proof enclosure for my newbies. I had 4 sets of babies go through it and very little dust thankfully :).

https://a.co/d/i6hEZSI - Is what I used for reference. Can keep about 15 full size for about 3/4 weeks before it gets too cramped.

Oh nice, thank you! I used something similar as a pen for a mama cat and her kitten. She kept knocking it over and it would fold up on itself, effectively folding the kitten inside it. I was scared the kitten would be injured or suffocate, so i moved them. I looked at one very similar to this when I got my chicks, but I was afraid they might do the same thing. I'm glad to hear yours worked.

To be fair, the cat and kitten were in it on my porch so I wasn't using any stakes or anything.
